Question

SCSI to SATA adapter?

Hello,

I am looking for something like this:

http://www.startech.com/item-specs/S...wer-Cable.aspx

To work on an HP ProLiant DL360/380. All I know is they are SCSI U320 drive bays, or that is the type of drive they take. Can anyone provide any insight on what may work? We are trying to get a more cost effective way to get more storage into a server. The largest SCSI drive I can find is 300GB for $200. You can get 2TB drives for that much these days.

Any insight on a way to make this happen would be much appreciated!

On that note; can you just hook up a sata via usb?

Or should a dedicated usb card be added first?

The servers in question don't have USB 2.0, so they would need a card, and that can end up being pricey.

Nope, cards are cheap, like $20.

I am going to do it here and there as needed to shore up my back-up and general array configuration.

And here are some other interesting options.

I just purchased one converter backplate IDE to SATA to USB 2.0

If you're going to add a usb card just to hook up sata, why not just get a sata card?

I've actually used a U320 to SATA adaptor with great success. The only drawback is that you have to use a 2.5inch SATA drive so its really only good for using an SSD.

Personally I'd say ditch those HP's and get some boxes that can take the right drives for you...

Why do you have to use smaller drives?

Basically its all about available space; A 3.5 inch drive isn't going to fit in another carrier in a space thats only meant for a 3.5inch drive.

Its possible someone could come up with some inline adaptor, but the electronics are just way too complex to fit in a really small space right now.

Oh, that's not a problem, I have another space to put the drives, could you post a link to these U320 to SATA adapters you are talking about?

Faze,

Trust me, you don't want to do this. We tried this in the past with some of our SUN V20z 1U servers that have a 2 disk capacity (u160 scsi) the issue is that using the adaptors in place with the backplane you can't properly mount disks and you'll have severe vibration issues resulting in very very very poor I/O.

Chuck the DL380s, they are massive power hogs anyway.

Alright, thanks. I'll just use regular drives, and look at getting different servers for our next batch.

Yah, they work great for what they are. Basically I used them to retrofit SSD's into some Dell 1550's (don't ask heheh).

http://www.acard.com.tw/english/fb01...&type1_idno=11

Very fast, so far reliable (3-4 months no problems) and they don't confuse Adaptec or LSI SCSI controllers with FreeBSD (who knows about loonix).

Don't use USB Why don't you buy an eSATA card and put the SATA drives in an external enclosure. I'd probably recommend buying a new server, if you use those adaptors there is a 99% chance the SCSI card won't recognise drives larger than 500Gb anyway.

If the servers are recent, they won't be SCSI U320 but SAS anyway. Some SAS cards can use SATA drives as the connections are compatible. What is the exact model of your server and what SAS/SCSI card does it have?
