Host Server in my loft. Any ISP?

Has anyone done this? I'm thinking of having a rack in my loft with my servers because colocation costs are more than i can afford. Can anyone suggest a good isp?

It depends where you are located. Do you want fiber run to your loft?

I think if you were even going to consider getting a fiber run it would be much more expensive than any colo. I am not familiar with UK broadband, but I am guessing you'd have ADSL and cable? You could probably get a biz line in those cases.

What will the boxes be running?

That was an alternative that i came up with...

I'm thinking of having VPSs. Which i thought will require 2 quad cores and loads of ram if i want to get the most out of each box.

I'm pretty sure colo is cheaper than getting a GigE line to your loft.

I can't see anyway that the colocation costs would be more than running fiber to your business plus having the power backup and cooling required for reliable hosting.

The reason why fiber would be required (not knowing your location, just guessing) is that you would be too far from the ISP POP to get ethernet service over basic ethernet cable.

I think once you add the costs up you will find it is way more expensive to bring gigabit service to a non DC on net location.

It really depends how many servers you need to supply with bandwidth. Colo is going to be your best bet if you are talking over 5 servers. In the US you can get some good deals on broadband service (like verizon FIOS) but they usually stick it to you when you need extra IPs. I was paying and extra $40/month for 5 IPs!!!! Most colo shops will give you 5 or charge maybe $1/IP.

If you are really serious go with colo. You will never be able to justify an in-house setup for an entire cabinet of servers. Power and cooling alone would be cheaper in a data center.

Looks like i've got to go with colo. But the cheapest i've found is £40 for 0.4amps.

If you only need a "server" in my loft meaning one you could get 5-10meg leased line from your ISP.
But this won't be cheap and colo would be looking alot better at somewhere like rapidswitch.

If you can afford that fancy of a server then you need to stop cheaping out on the colocation.

colocation cost is monthly and over a year it makes a difference!!! the server is a one off, and it wont cost me much because im building it myself.

If $100-200/month colocation is too much for you .. then get out of the business.. because your pricing model is not fit for it.

Colocation cost have dropped drastically over the years. Now you can find colocation for as low as $25/month per unit. If you have 5-10 units you'd like to colocate you should spend the money.

If you can't cover the expenses with your pricing or can't cover the expenses for a few months, you aren't ready to get into the market.
