looking for a geocoties replacement
hi, I need a place to host two (2) simple html pages. and I don't really want to pay 5$/m.
I am using free geocities and this month, i exceeded their limit 7 times, whatever that means. Do you think 1GB data transfer/m is enough for me?
because im looking at limedomains.com and their basic hosting which is free with a domain purchase.
or if you could suggest me other hosts that can offer me similar service, thanks

Do you have any stats for visitors to your website? 1GB should be enough depending upon how large these two pages are and how many visitors you get.

Virtually every shared host should be able to accommodate your needs, and it looks like you need only a basic shared plan.

if the sites are worth keeping then the investment shouldn't be much of an issue - and you may be able to get custom plans from hosts if you want to save more. but not sure if anyone uses the geocities setup though (i haven't used them in so long) - getting a cPanel host and uploading your two html files would do the trick.
and I think geocities still forces ads, while most cpanel hosts wouldn't. other CP options are Direct admin, plesk, etc.

no i don't mind losing geocities setup. not sure what you mean by that neither... I really don't know squat about web hosting...
I just went on google site, it looks like they also use complicated address, (sites.google.com/site/myname) which is something i'd like to avoid.
I have some general questions before I choose any host.
What will happen to my domain name after a year. assuming I don't renew it. Will it become available for other to purchase immediately? (in other words, can I re-buy it from a different host if I choose to?)
what about emails, is it easy to transfer?
Iv read here that I should get the domain and hosting from different company. is there a particular reason for this?

You should be alright finding a host for a low price, lower than $5/month.
If you are willing to pay yearly, you can usually get a plan for $10-$20/year which usually are great value.
You can also usually find some hosts lowest plans for $3-$4. Just check around the shared hosting offers on this forum and you'll probably find something which suites your needs.
What will happen to my domain name after a year. assuming I don't renew it. Will it become available for other to purchase immediately? (in other words, can I re-buy it from a different host if I choose to?)

Since you're on Geocities you won't be able to save your past e-mails easily. If you are transfering from cPanel to cPanel you can save your past e-mails. You can setup your e-mail addresses again aka me@mydomain.com easily on a new host, just won't have the past e-mails on them.
It's upto you for which you go with in buying domains. People register domains at different companies for security, to keep them seperate, to make sure one thing won't affect the other. The prices you find will be around the same from a domain registar directly or from the host. A good registar is Namecheap.com

I hope you find some good hosting,

You can check out WHT's sister site http://www.freewht.com, it is for free hosting and might be more geared to your $0 price . A lot of the hosts there will let you use your TLD with them so you can register it somewhere cheap like GoDaddy.

Good luck in finding your hoster, remember to look for reviews on WHT or ask for opinions about any if you are unsure. Make sure you go with the right host to meet your needs and future needs.

If 2 basic html pages have been going over 1gb transfer in a month, there must be large files that are downloaded or similar.
Do you have a high amount of traffic or is it a download type site?

You have two months to decide.
Geocities is shutting down October 26, 2009.

Almost any host can support your site, you should look at Hostgator or JaguarPC. The thing that sets Jag apart is the fact they use R1Soft CDP, I don't know of any other host that does that.

There are thousands that use it, but only Jag allows you to have access to their system to restore your account at any point in time. That's what I meant.██ l Dedigeeks • Shared • Wordpress • Dedicated • Established 2006

You obviously don't understand what I mean, they have a proprietary system that allows you to access your section of the R1soft CDP. That means you can restore at ANY point and not have to keep cpanel backups, etc. Read their website it explains it better.

I have not, your right. I was merely just stating, and as I said, I have never seen another host offer that. Either way, let's just drop it?██ l Dedigeeks • Shared • Wordpress • Dedicated • Established 2006
