Zip folder over FTP
I have a folder of 1 GB on a server and need to ZIP it via FTP. Is this possible ??
If not, how do I zip it via SSH?
You cant do it using FTP.
But ofcourse you can do it using ssh.
First login to your server using ssh
ssh -l username hostname
it will ask for the password .. enter the password and go to the directory where your directory resides.
then execute the command
zip -r yourzipfilename.zip directoryname
it will create the zip file
I never knew how to do this but always wanted to know how you do this too. Thanks for posting this thread and replying to it
You could possibly write a script that does it from the command line in windows or linux that would open an ftp connection, zip and download.
What kind of server is it? If it's linux:
tar -cf filename.tar folder
You should get folder.tar.gz which is the zipped folder.
