    Screen resolution

    Hello!
I'm considering a notebook with the screen resolution 1680x1050 but I don't know whether I'll like that resolution or not. Currently I have 1280x800. Would I be able to use the 1280x800 resoltion on the 1680x1050 display with the same results as 1280x800 resolution on a 1280x800 display?

    Regards
    Oskar

No, LCD monitors can only display native resolution correctly. 1680x1050 is too high resolution for notebooks under 17".

Depends on the monitor... I've seen PLENTY of lcd monitors go down, without issue. They won't be able to show all the resolutions, but most show fine. You might also need to use 3rd party software (ie nvida's software) to set up correctly. Depends on the machine...

1280 x 800 might not show good but 1280 x 768 (I believe that is it) might show fine.

Depends... but to say an lcd can only display native resolution is not 100% true. I'm sure there are those out there that will only show their native resolution well.

1280x800 is a great resolution to use on a 17" monitor, any higher is not able to display.

1280x800 will display correctly on an LCD with a native res of 1680x1050, as they're both the same aspect ratio. What you will notice though, as the display won't be running at native, is things will look somewhat blurry. It's usable, but you won't get the nice crispness you're likely used to on LCDs. I've also found that res to be *way too tiny* on a notebook, even with a 17" LCD. You'll want your eyes to last you a lifetime

My suggestion: look for something 1440x900. You can run that one at 1280x800 too if you wish (same aspect ratio again, 16:10), but at least you can run at native res on a smaller (15-17") LCD without murdering your eyes.

Note: this is all obv. subjective, I know people that *love* 1680x1050 on 17" laptops. The blurriness from not running at native, though, is not subjective.

My last laptop was a Dell 6400 15.4" running 1680x1050 and I loved it. I found that that was the perfect resolution for using outlook as you could see everything without scrolling. But I admit that unless the laptop was right in front of me it was too small and I would not encourage many people to go that route. But it was optimal for me. My new laptop is a Dell E6500 15.4" and it smallest resolution it supports natively is 1440x900 which I still don't like while using outlook because your preview pane is either too narrow, or if you put it at the bottom your list of messages is too short for my liking... I know I'm a picky user But 1440x900 is very useful for most other tasks can be easily used at a distance of 24"-36" unlike the 1680x1050.

I strongly suggest buying a screen with the resolution you intend on using. Yes most other resolutions will display, but the blurryness will be a noticeable sacrifice.
