    mailto: going to SPAM??

    Hi,
I have a customer that has a big contact list hosted in a php CRM. He contacted me saying that if he mailed one of his contacts directly from Outlook Express the mail goes ok, but if he clicked the mailto: HTML link on the CRM (Outlook Express opens), the mail goes directly to the junk folder.

My first answer was: THIS IS IMPOSSIBLE, YOU ARE DOING SOMETHING ELSE WRONG.

Now I wonder: Is there ANY possibility that he is right and this CAN actually happen??

    Thanks!

    Powi

I can think of two possible reasons:

    1.
The HTML link on the CRM contains not only the email address but adds in additional parameters (look for a question mark in value assigned to 'href'), such as
    <a href="mailto:[email protected]?subject=Buy%20viagra!&body=Some%20static%20text%20to%20appear%20in%20email%20body">
Of course, 'viagra' is just an example here. It could be any words or constellation of words which is always added to these emails when a mailto: link in the CRM is clicked on, the recipients' spam filter considers indication for spam, for whatever reason.

    2.
Outlook Express may add different email headers when it receives an email through the 'mailto:' interface than when it is created by the user from within the application ('compose new email' function). I do not know Outlook Express well enough to be able to tell whether or not it does this.

You can easily determine whether any of these hypotheses applies by making a test.

Thanks! I'm sure the mailto: link is not adding extra code, its just "mailto:[email protected]".

I can't find big differences on the email. Here's a copy of the tests I did:

    Mail 1
    Code:

Indeed, they look very much the same. The only difference I can spot is that in the first sample you have 'prueba' in the subject line and the two (plain text/html) body parts, which you have 'Prueba' in the same locations in the second sample.

I would rather expect that the reason is a completely different one, such as a temporary blacklisting of cpanel72b.gzo.com [75.126.148.32]. It is not listed on the major RBLs by the time of writing.
