    YUM Issue on Linux Server

I'm installing a GUI on my centos 5 dedicated server. I got to the point where I needed to download x-window desktop and for some reason, it would not find a mirror that worked. Prior to trying to install x-windows, I installed KDE just fine through YUM.

Because yum could not find a suitable mirror for X, I did the command "yum clean all". After that, I tried yum update to update. This time however, I get this error:

    Loaded plugins: fastestmirror
    Determining fastest mirrors
Could not retrieve mirrorlist http://mirrorlist.centos.org/?releas...h=i386&repo=os error was
[Errno 4] IOError: <urlopen error (-3, 'Temporary failure in name resolution')>
Error: Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: base

This error now occurs whenever I use YUM and has started happening after i ran the yum clean all command.

Anyone have any idea how to fix this?

    Thanks

Most probably, the nameservers used by that server is down. Nameservers are listed in /etc/resolve.conf. Check if they are pingable or resolvable. Try

    Code:
    dig yahoo.com @<NameserverIP>
The above error can occur due to firewall issues too. Try stopping the firewall and running yum. But, don't stop it forever

    fabin,

I've tried your methods with the dig and firewall...the firewall has no effect and it does not resolve.

Here are the contents of my resolv.conf file. I'm hosted with FDC Servers

    Code:
    search box.local
    nameserver 76.73.85.74
    nameserver 76.73.85.74
Any idea how to fix this? I did not modify anything prior to this and my box also uses cpanel/whms

    Hi

    Try using different Resolvers. (opendns)

    nameserver 208.67.222.222
    nameserver 208.67.220.220

also remove the search line at the top

    Thanks

I don't think the nameserver (76.73.85.74) is resolvable..

    Try using different Resolvers. (opendns)

    nameserver 208.67.222.222
    nameserver 208.67.220.220

also remove the search line at the top
Never use opendns in servers. If an IP address doesn't have A record, opendns will still provide one of their IP address.

Try using 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 as nameservers.

Glad it's working for you now but you may want to contact FDC and ask them why the resolvers they provided you aren't working
