    kernel questions...

whats the difference between PAE, SMP and nothing kernels?

is there an advantage to using 4KB pages over 8KB pages?

if im using a 32bit OS and 4GB RAM for High Memory Support do i use 4GB or the 64GB option? When I do 4GB RAM option i end up with around 3.2GB showing up in the "free" command.

If you have a 32 bit OS, literally it can address 2^32 address locations ~=4GB.

If you have more than 4GB RAM, your 32 bit OS can't address it.

If you have 2 or more processors, you can use smp enabled kernels, so that they can connect to a single shared (main memory).

PAE is a feature that allows you to address more memory location than the original limit, so a 32 bit OS can address more than 2^32 (4GB) memory location, if PAE is enabled.

A kernel should closely match the arch of the processor inside your machine. Newer CPUs like the Intel Xeons, Core2 Quad and AMD Opteron/Phenom can address more RAM, apps run better and do not fail when the correct port of the kernel/OS is put in. Now to know which kernel goes in where, do a 'cat /proc/cpuinfo' and look at your RAM size. If the CPU can do 'lm', do a reinstall with the amd64/x86_64 port of your GNU/Linux distribution.

The more clued you get, the more reading you would do. Start digging right away and ask for the correct OS port from your beloved hosting provider!

I also have a question about kernels,

    what does this error mean?

    --------------------- Kernel Begin ------------------------

WARNING: General Protection Faults in these executables
    php : x Time(s)

    ---------------------- Kernel End -------------------------
I changed the number of times to x.
