You're probably fine if you are reverse engineering games and using root kits to not use anti virus, I'd say you're smart enough not to open an .exe attachment from some unknown source claiming that you have won 1 million dollars, and that you need to click the .exe to claim your prize :-/. Personally I don't use anti virus. Mac/Linux
That being said, when I am "blessed" to work with a windows computer, I just practice safe browsing/email habits and make sure it is fully up to date.

I currently only use AVG Free. Though it's never reported any viruses and I haven't seen any virus activity. The best anti-virus is the owner him/herself

I was using avast home edition on my laptop, but i've since found out bt provide mcaffee free of charge to option 2 and 3 customers, so I've removed avast, and installed that instead for xp.
For Vista, on the same machine, i've got avast on (only because I rarely boot into vista, and so haven't bothered changing it to mcaffee yet.)
For linux, I use nothing (my linux installation currently has no wireless after a kernel update that I haven't got round to fixing yet, and even when it did work, I never ran as root (only used sudo), so the damage a virus could have done was very limited.
For my other laptop, running Server 2003, I use no anti-virus (an old server I had I used trendmicro serverprotect on it, but that caused problems with it continually rebooting, so I removed it, and just ran it without anti-virus with next no problems (noticable one's anyway...the way I ran it, I'm sure it had to have at least 1 virus on it)....If it needed a reinstall due to infections, I just backed it up to another server I had with the same host, reimaged it, then moved everything back.)

Personally I use AVG Free Edition - I really like it as it don't need to much cpu or memory (in my father company commercial AVG works great as well). In my company we use F-Secure - and I hate it. Usually it is not even able to remove found viruses - it just inform owner that it is found and do nothing with it! My vote is for AVG

McAfee. Mainly due to cost. I know there is better performing stuff out there, but, it doesn't really bother me (except for 3 seconds when it freezes during an update). It does the job anyway!
