Are there any good VPS providers?

I'm thinking of moving (or at least getting a backup) VPS and just looking at the thread titles on this forum it doesn't seem that anyone is happy!

Main things I'm looking for are:

    1. NOT a one-man company (probably eliminates 95% of hosts!)

    2. NOT using HyperVM or or a broken install of VDSManager.

    3. NOT using UKServers as datacenter or anyone else whose PXE-boot keeps stealing your IP address and arping you off the network.

    4. NOT so oversold that the node disk is often full so can't do backups.

    5. Unmanaged 64-Bit Ubuntu 8.04 Linux (OpenVZ, Virtuozzo, or maybe Xen) obviously I'll need SSH access, root access, iptables access etc. Console access from the host node is nice too.

    6. I think I use around 3-4Gb a month bandwidth and currently under 2Gb disk, but I'd want more than that for growth obviously.

    7. 2+ IP addresses, reverse DNS, unlimited domains.

    8. UK or France or other European location (probably eliminates 75% of the offers forum).

    9. VAT registered company would be nice.

    10. 512Mb guaranteed / 1Gb burstable RAM.

    11. Good price.

I'd also be interested in a way to clone my current OpenVZ VPS to another VPS container, so I could have the two working at the same time; that way if one went down, I could just switch DNS to point to the backup; all without having to rebuild the whole OS. Not sure what the restrictions are on that - do you have to have the same host node hardware/kernel etc?

Also with the CentOS developers going AWOL, perhaps no CentOS host nodes?

I think there are quite some hosts to choose from based on your requirements.

There are even offers in the VPS Hosting Offers that meet all of your requirements.

Yeah I've looked through there and its mostly US stuff or people with no reviews/startups.

CentOS is back on track. Also, unless ping is vital to you, you'll be fine with a US company as well, and you will most likely not have to pay VAT.

Another thing to note: people tend to only post when they have troubles with a host, and for every unhappy client, there are 3 happy ones, or so we like to say .

I think Rapidswitch could be an option for most of your requirements.

You will only find out how good a provider is when the going gets tough

The problems with CentOS are now solved. For your type of requirements, any "premium" VPS provider in the offers section should do you good - just have a look around

xensmart look like they still need to sort their hypervm migration.

    resellerzoom is way too expensive.

rapidswitch looks ok, but doesn't give you much info.

I'm currently looking at a geographically separate datacentre with my current host.

Mind saying who you use at the moment so we can make suggestions based on that?

There are loads of great hosts.
Unfortunately clients when happy generally don't speak out much about the service in public.
Therefore 99% of the time reviews you see are going to be negative.
I normally see how long a company has been around, contact then and find some people that have used them before if you can't find any reviews.

Have you tried to search through various combinations of keywords in the WHT search form. It always helps to me to find some information. A search in local directories and local versions of search engines will also work. I've seen that you requirements can be met by many companies. I would suggest you to contact some provides to test their response time and the way they answer to inquiries. One more think, if a UK is in your country list, this makes your choice very easy.

the best is if you can contact directly some providers, I will not say that your requiremments will eliminate many hosts

    Waveweb.com can sort you out.

Will setup a live migration as part of their service and include CPanel.

They are virtuozzo based as well. Strong company with support all over the globe to match different time zones.

I personally use them. Been great, I get a response within 10 - 15 minutes of all tickets.

Have you short listed some providers yet? What is your budget?

Good service comes at a price, especially with a big list of requirements like that

It would be difficult for your to find the VPS your are looking for if you want to pay only $10 - $15 per month. I think that the $40 price someone mentioned above is fair and it is not high one at all.

i'm looking at no more than 15ukp (25usd) a month, that's absolute maximum, really looking for more like a tenner a month (15usd) unless its my dream host!

rapidswitch.com are looking pretty good so far, their 8ukp package isn't quite enough for my needs, but their 15ukp package is way overkill.
