Download website using SSH
I wanted download my entire site using SSH instead of FTP since one of my folders has a few thousand files and my FTP client isn't showing (and downloading) me all of them.
Can anybody please give me the SSH commands to download everything on my dedicated server? I have Putty.
try to tar an archive from ssh and then ftp it.
I would recommend using scp for server to server transfers.
You can do it something like this, but adjust it for your server's settings:
In other words, copy /home/user/* (-r) using stream compression (-C) off of server1 and put the files in /home/user/ on the local machine.
I would to, except the OP didn't say that's what he was doing.

You can create a tar file of all the files and subdirectorieswith the
tar cf archive.tar /path/of/homedirectoy
and download that file using your browser of ftp tool.
on the server tar the site content by:
than from your computer download it using wget
tar -Pzcf /var/www/path/to/site/documents/root/backup.tar.gz /var/www/path/to/site/documents/root/
or by typing http //www yourwebsite com/backup.tar.gz in browser
wget http //www yourwebsite com/backup.tar.gz
don't forget to delete the file after downloading it
