New Business Idea for you: Upload+Download Service

I just read about the great new amazon cloud idea and found that this can be something i'm willing to pay for if theres somebody out there who can offer a good price.

A service to which i can send a USB Stick, DVD Rom or Harddisk and the who is copying data into an online space or downloaded data from the internet to it.

Everyone who ever tried to download a backup of his website with a few tens of Gigabyte knows that with typical ASDL speed this is a crazy thing, for example it takes weeks to get up a 30GB inital webspace content.

Even my 1,5 GB that i have to upload every week is almost impossible. I would love to send a DVD to a service who puts this on a fast server.

That is a good idea, however, lets say you have 1,300 customers, which 80% have a web site over 3 GB. 3gb can take between 1-5 mins to burn or rip from any disk depending on the hardware and the make of the disk.

Simple maths:
1040 Customers want to send in 1 Dvd Each, and for average sake we'll say it takes 4 mins to rip the data from the disk, that's 4160 mins of just retrieving Data. Plus there may have to more then 1 disk involved if the customer doesnt have a blueray disk burner or reader. An 8.5GB dvd is 1.22 EACH. I dont think customers will want to spend more money?

I like it, but its not practical

Hi there,

Most providers / friendly ISPs would be glad to copy your USB key / pen or DVD into the server if you send it via snail mail. This has been done for a long time now and is nothing new. Now, I'm not sure if this would work on a large scale since labor logistics is going to be an issue.

Regards

Well a DVD is more like 50 Cent. And if you setup two SCSI controllers each with 8 DVD Burners. Maybe slimeline you could do a lot of DVD's in one hour.

Say you charge 5$ for one and it takes 5 minutes to burn/copy this is 192 DVD's per hour and an $864 per hour. (yes, i know - post office work - data bandwidth on a 1GB switch to the backbone ....)

It all depends on the fact that you need a lot of customers to keep the pipelines up.

Of course you need to have the preprocessing at home because this can't be done in the data center. You would prepare and burn everything in your office on a hotswapable 2 TB Harddisk and take your bycycle every day on a ride to the data center and simply swap the hard disks there.

I mean many people are out of work now. Better trying then being in the unemployment lines. If i would live next to a datacenter i would try it out. Investment costs of this looks like you can get away with about 3000$ hardware and well .... lots of marketing.

Who's to blame if the customer sends you faulty hardware in the first place and then takes it out on you - even if it was damaged in the post.

Personally, I would say it's a nice idea before I'd say it's a good idea. You'd be putting your reputation on the line by offering a service that you can not manage each process of.

On the other hand, you could charge your customers to provide memory sticks, etc on their behalf - some companies already provide hard copy backup services.

yeh sounds like a good idea there are a few problems.

Damage or corruption of the physical medium holding the data.
Also its going to take a lot of admin hours putting drives in and out of servers to transfer the data to the web.
Also inventory of equipment would be a nightmare.
And so many types of connections, usb, dvd, firewire, ide, sata, scsi... you get the point

Do you know of a hard copy upload service?

And i think the current offerers all have a total different price tag and customer binding on it.

A service where you pay 5 bucks and get a 5GB Slot for two weeks to which you can upload/download stuff and get/send a DVD. I've never seen anything. I would love to.

Small customer service is IMHO always a good niche to start a business as you are right, it's not really a business modell for a 20 person comany but as a family business? Why not?

Currently i'm living in Thailand and bulk down/uploads for my internet business are a pain in the ass. I would have to use an offer like this.

Well if it is only a one time setup thing. How much time does it cost to look for a new job in this hard days. And if admin tasks is something that you already know.

This need to be automated a lot, right. And different connections? Well external would be only DVD and USB Sticks. I think that with complete Harddisks it would be indeed better to leave this to a real hosting provider as a customer service.

Its a costly thing, but It could work out if you had enough people on that service.

Its just a matter then of your company size and your willingness to do the work.

I just thought of this aswell, you have security issues aswell. You wont know whats on the disk untill you put into the machine. That could be dangerous and could cost alot to repair.

I can't think about any physical/technical problems that comes from simple file copying.

Of course the political most serious the child porn distribution problem is indeed there.

And there is a problem that people shouldn't use this as a public download service for large files. But it's easy to write a specialized webserver module that allows only a single download.

Of course there is that, but I mean like a virus.

One situation is there they get sent a disk by another 'rival' company who pretends to be a customer, and it has crippled their entire network putting them out of business for hours to days or even weeks. That would be my only concern for this idea.

May I suggest that you buy online backup space? There are a number of companies that host backups. Its crazy backing up all that data using your home connection. Use the Internet to store your backups.
