Should I use Firewall on my server?

I have the following system installed on my server:

    Ubuntu Linux 8.04.2
    Apache version 2.2.8
    BIND version 9.4.2
    Webmin version 1.480
    Virtualmin version 3.72.gpl GPL
    Postfix version 2.5.1
    Dovecot IMAP/POP3 Server Version 1.0.10
    ProFTPd version 1.31
    MySQL version 5.0.51

Should I use Firewall? If yes, can someone tell me exactly how to turn it on using Webmin/ Virtualmin?

    Thanks for your help.

Yes, install either APF or CSF.

    Thanks for the quick reply.

I am new to dedicated servers - so this silly question :

    To install CSF:

    rm -fv csf.tgz
    tar -xzf csf.tgz
    cd csf
    Run that in SSH.
    FazeWire Web Services.

Can I go ahead and run these commands on a live website? Will it in any way mess up my server/website?

What about the "Linux Firewall" option within webmin?

Sorry, since I am new, I am a bit nervous. Is there anything I should check before I run these commands?

    Thanks for your help.

If you are new and on a budget, check out PSM.

You get your $29/mo worth, even if you just use them to config your firewall. Some places charge $75-$150 just for a one time shot to do that.

I think PSM only works with cPanel Servers.

Yes, but they handle Linux + cPanel administration. So Linux stuff is covered as well.

A firewall should be a must in every system. There always needs to be more protection, the better.

I will echo the many in here that have already responded. Every server should have a great array of security measures in place. A firewall is a basic requirement for any server. APF and CSF are good, well known commonly used firewalls that are highly recommended.

Thanks for all the responses. Just a couple more questions:

    1. Is csf + mod_security something that I can install or manage (after installing with ssh) using virtualmin/webmin?

    2. Can I go ahead and run the following commands (suggested by Fazewire) on my live server/ site? Should I check something before I install?
    rm -fv csf.tgz
    tar -xzf csf.tgz
    cd csf
    3. How do I install Mod_security?

    Thanks for all the help.

Before you install, you should read the installation instructions ( and the readme ( files. Those will guide you step by step on the installation and configuration process.

CSF can be managed through Webmin. Here are the instructions for that:

    Webmin Module Installation/Upgrade
To install or upgrade the csf webmin module:
    Install csf as above
Install the csf webmin module in:
Webmin > Webmin Configuration > Webmin Modules >
From local file > /etc/csf/csfwebmin.tgz > Install Module
After this you will be able to manage it at http://youraddress:10000/csf

I'm not sure about a plugin for mod_security.

I'm not sure who your provider is and whether they are managed or self-managed, but I would strongly recommend you talk to them about this. Being that your new in the dedicated server area, they may be able to walk you through and/or perform the installation/configuration of the firewall for you. It's always best to make sure everything is covered and there are no loose ends.
