Can't send email to some domains 5.1.17 error
Hi,
I've recently moved to a new hosting company (Media Temple). All seems to have gone smoothly but I can't send emails to some particular domains. These domains are hosted on our old server if that could be an issue.
When I try to send mail to these addresses, I'm given an error message in Thunderbird which says "An error occurred while sending the email. The mail sever responded: sorry, no mailbox here by that name. (#5.1.17). Please check the message recipients and try again."
Any ideas on how to solve this ASAP?
Thanks in advance,
Brendan

Hello,
This message is also typically displayed when trying to send mail without first authenticating, with the server requiring SMTP authentication and/or is not an open relay.
Check with your hosting provider to ensure you have the correct SMTP settings in your client.
Hope this helps!Brock Hensley

Do you get this with every mailbox to that domain or just some?
Can you send them from hotmail/yahoo with any issues?
Honestly it just sounds like incorrect DNS setup for the domain in question or cached MX record (which won't matter in a few hours anyway)
If you really can't figure it out you are welcome to PM the domain, a valid email address, old mail server IP and new mail server IP and I could tell you what is wrong in about 20 seconds. Would take to long to draw out a flow chart on how you troubleshoot SMTP.

Or do the following (easier then a flow chart)
open a telnet session to the new mail servers IP address (port 25)
Windows: "Telnet IPADDRESS 25"
And type the following:
helo testing.com
mail from: test@testing.com
rcpt to: WHATEVEREMAIL@ADDRESSISVALID.COM
data
test
.
Tell me where it errors. If it doesn't, you have a DNS issue, if it errors at connecting to the IP it is a SMTP server issue, if it errors at rcpt to it is a mailbox issue. IF YOU SWEAR it isnt a mailbox issue but it looks like it is try it from a different IP as some anti-spam software will reply back with mailbox doesn't exist if flagged.Last edited by nolimitsoldier; 08-12-2009 at 08:27 PM.
