    * Considering starting a free web host

I have a spare VPS and I am thinking of setting up a small free hosting setup to test the waters.

I presently have a VPS with 5GB storage, 50GB bandwidth and 256MB RAM.

I couldn't find a whole lot over at FWHT so I figured I would ask here where it is more active. I am trying to find out what people recommend for a control panel and operating system as well as ways to market it as I am new to these waters.

I have run a few free webhosting companies in the past. There are two real paths you can go here.

    1. Layeredpanel
    2. cPanel/WHM + iPanel

To be honest, with the low end VPS you have, cPanel may not be an option, so that leaves LP. LP can be tough to troubleshoot when things go south, and it's interface is not quite as friendly as that of cPanel. You may want to check out the demo of LP on their site.

    Cheers.

Yes, I realize the VPS I have is wimpy, but I figured it would be a nice inexpensive way to figure out how things are done before investing additional capital.

I have another server for my paid hosting operation, but I don't want to risk putting free clients on the same server if I end up getting a spammer or something not so nice ruining it for the paid clients.

I did check out layered panel and it does look quite appealing.

50GB bandwidth is probably no where near enough to run a successful free host unless you are going to put in some very harsh bandwidth controls on a per client basis. All it takes is one guy to put up porn videos and hotlink it from a successful forum and you can chew through that in a day easily. It might work if you will be very picky about who you provide free hosting to....

Valid point, however I figure if I offer some small accounts and get maybe 10 users on there to try it out I can get a feel for what issues will arise and how best to maintain software like layered panel or ipanel. I already have this VPS so I would like a proof of concept before takings funds from the paid operation to help start the "free" operation.

10 users is not enough to get a good sample of what you can expect. Sure, those 10 might be the best users, but you are bound to get one abuser every so often. However, the chances of that happening are slim, so you might be ok with 50GB transfer to start.

It's just a matter of when...
