Teacher makes teen smoke 42 cigarettes

She punishes model student upon finding smokes and lighter in his locker

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia - A Malaysian teacher forced a student to smoke 42 cigarettes for four hours as punishment after a cigarette and lighter were found in his locker, a news report said Thursday.

A school official confirmed that the English teacher subjected the student to the unusual punishment, but said the teenager was made to smoke fewer than 42 cigarettes. He declined to elaborate.

He said the teacher was upset when she found a model student, 16-year-old Mohamad Alif Arifin, had a cigarette and lighter in his locker in the school in the northern island of Langkawi.

TBH, I think this is a good punishment, but I think smoking is extremely disgusting, so I think smokers should be treated like that.

When I read this it just made me think of the king of hill episode when Hank makes Bobby smoke an entire cartoon as punishment

Wish the west could get away with such simple sensible punishments.

Mind you, I guess the guy will quit smoking, but take up sex in the hope of getting caught & 'Punished' !

I couldn't agree more (and for the record I'm in the west - but in the hick redneck part

When I was 6 or 7 my parents had me smoke a cig - being so young I had no idea what it was or how it worked - they told me to "suck really hard" - to this day I can't stand smokers or anything like it.

Did the same with beer too - let's just say it worked almost too well - instead of beer I drink cola and now have bad teeth.

I'm just glad my parents didn't get arrested by the do-good society.

This punishment wouldn't work where I live... well hopefully the kid doesn't smoke anymore.

    I personally hate smokes.

I'm more curious at the fact of a "nicotine high". I get one from one cig in the morning. Let alone a cig after a cig after a cig... crazy.

Agreed though, hopefully the little bugger will smarten up and quit.

I find the habit rather disgusting. It's one thing I do not plan to try. But I don't think it's the teacher's responsibility to discipline the kid like that. What are his parents for? If a teacher did that in the United States (at least, where I live), they'd most likely be fired.

What the heck would make a teacher feel this is a desirable punishment. The teacher should have notified people higher up and have the parents deal with the situation SENSE! they are the parents!

If we are to apply 'western standards' to this, then what was the teacher doing looking
    in the locker ?
    That's a bnreach of 'western privacy' isn't it ?

    Heck No!

Kids don't have "privacy rights" - in the west they barely have civil rights (at least around here - they put police in the schools where I am and give you a ticket and a day in court if you are late to class too many times)

Besides, the locker is school property - they can go through it any time.

That's the dumbest thing I've heard in a long time. Going to court for being late? Honestly, at my school half the time the teachers are late. That's just ridiculous.

Yes it is very stupid - but it's the government, so not much you can do short of protests and riots - and people 'round here are fat and lazy.

I'll tell you something even dumber - the county judge that takes those stupid cases has no law degree and seems like a racist - but again, it's government, so not much to do. Some parts in the deep south of the USA are like this - I happen to be in one such part. As long as it doesn't affect me I'm okay with it since my taxes are very low compared to elsewhere (and I can always move if it ever affects me anyway)

    Back on topic....

If the teachers goal was to stop the person from smoking they likely did the exact opposite - when someone is addicted to something the last thing you want to do is give them *more* of the substance they are addicted to

The school I went to had a much more direct method of punishment - beat the crap out of the kid until they do what is right - many of my fellow students left with broken arms until they eventually figured it out....that is messed up! I was a good student most of the time except once and my punishment was getting my hand slammed in a door - lost a few fingernails but they grew back after a few weeks and I didn't break anything important

The problem with making him do that, is that it will take months (possibly years) for his body to recover from, what is in effect, abuse. The other thing is, that his body will never recover from the changes that the chemicals within the cigarettes have done to his nervous system.

Has anyone considered that he wasn't a smoker and that he was just keeping them for someone? However unlikely, it is still a possibility. So not only could he have been punished for something that he didn't do, but also his body has been damaged by his teacher.

In my opinion, this is no better than the teacher hitting him. That would have actually been better, because most of the body's tissues are designed to be replaced (muscle, skin, bone etc).

haha thats a good way to think of it.. i meant the taking up sex part. I just have one thing to say for all those saying its a good way to punish him. I am a moderate smoker and I have been smoking for a few years now (which means I'm quite used to the smoke), however when I chain smoke a few in a row, and by a few i mean 3+, its quite hard! I can only imagine how hard and harmful smoking 42 cigarettes in row can be. I'm sure he couldn't breath properly at one point. Putting the humor aside, it is a brutal punishment and it shouldn't be tolerated.

    That is nasty,

That teacher should be ashamed of himself. 42 Cigarettes for a pretty young lady is absurd.

I hope the kid learned his lesson. What seems to be shocking to some of you.... but this is quite a norm in Asia countries. Where I grew up, the teacher hits you with a PVC pipe (or practically anything they get their hands on) twice per point for not making at least the score of 90 and above on every single test.

So if I made 74 on the test, that's 32 hits on both hands.

I agree smoking is a bad habit. I smoked for 8 years, quit last year due to health problems. If I had another chance, I would've not picked up smoking.

Your view is totally wrong, its not like that... i don't construe on what basis you can say he would quit smoking.

I doubt he will smoke again =P

Not the best thing for a teacher to do, however.

Biju, you know I'm right realy, I'm always right.

Can I suggest you and anybody else that has a similar view,
tries to chain smoke 42 cigeretes [at the tender age of 16, so you'll need to travel back in time] then posts back here telling us how you feel

On reflection it might have been better for the teacher to take the kid to the local hospital, chemo ward, radiotherapy ward, hospice, funeral parlor and ending up at the local cemetary/crematorium.
