I was not able to find a SHOUTCAST section on WHT so I have included part of my message thats about Shoutcast here.
I used to run a shoutcast hosting business. It went fairly well and eventually died off against the other competition so I stopped it for a short while. Now I am back to try once again however I wanted to see if the majority of people thought this is a market thats still worth looking into or not.
There is much more need for shared hosting than something like shoutcast hosting but im not entirely sure if its worth starting up again because it just doesn't seem to be standing out online much (the demand for it) even here on WHT they dont have a section for it.
I was planning on starting shoutcast hosting, get a fair few customers and start shared hosting as well and so on...
I know what im doing and how to get it setup and running but grabbing the market is my downfall as I dont have too much experience in how to attract these few people out there also against the current competition.
Shared Hosting. This is now a MASSIVE market and MASSIVE competition that gets cheaper by the day and roughly the same question above. Is it now still worth going for shared hosting? I have my own Dell dedicated server (no not just my home computer a full dedicated poweredge) which I intend to use once i get the customers coming in using a VPS for starters (cost affective and its high end VPS's also so they work fine).
If you can keep costs low enough then go for it, but there is so much competition out there it might not be best considering trying to make a career out of it unless you have huge amount of investment capital, and i mean huge
I am not publicly hosting yet so the prices can still change however I believe thats fair. Some hosts offer at ridiculously low prices like £1 for their highest plans. Cant compete with that but im sure most would come to realise that type of price would Loose the host money in the long run and eventually shut them down.
P.S - Feel free to make some suggestions on the site design so far (still under construction) I would appreciate it. (Its yet to be coded completely so mainly just Design wise)
Ive come to know the true demand for Support as much as possible for most customers and thats one aspect I will be focusing on. Obviously we cant all be online 24/7 however luckily I have friends across the world (me being in England) that im sure would be able to offer their support to my customers so our support lives upto its name.
There is a Free service all my customers receive which im sure once most realise the potential of it, it will help to have them stay or come aboard VeraciousHost (i'll reveal more details soon).
I too have considered offering Shoutcast however like you I don't really see a large market for it.
Unlike a web site which just sites there & basically "runs itself" Shoutcast sites require much effort on the part of the site owner and I wonder how many are "up" for that effort in this economy.
Good luck with what you decide but as you found there are low cost Shoutcast providers so I don't see it as a big market unless there is a niche i find that might be interested enough to devote a server to it.

Obviously im looking into the various ideas to focus it down to a Niche to attract those few that are still out there to my hosting but wondered if anyone had some ideas/tips of what I could do to get myself going once its up?
