Help - which mail services do I need?

    Hi All,

In my effort to optimize my VPS box, I did two things, got free dns with, which saved few megs and cpu cycles for nameserver on my box, and then I've set up account with google apps to handle my email. That is free and fits my needs. So, mail server is there, I don't need to run that on my vps.

    1) I've disabled mailman.
    2) Then, I have disabled imap, exim and pop3 from WHM service manager panel.
    3) I also disabled mailserver in WHM Mailserver Selection panel.

Despite of all this, I still have those guys running:
    dovecot 18243 0.0 0.3 4792 1840 ? S 20:28 0:00 pop3-login
    dovecot 18244 0.0 0.3 4792 1840 ? S 20:28 0:00 pop3-login
    dovecot 18245 0.0 0.3 4796 1840 ? S 20:28 0:00 imap-login
    dovecot 18246 0.0 0.3 4796 1840 ? S 20:28 0:00 imap-login
    root 18201 0.0 0.1 1796 588 ? Ss 20:28 0:00 /usr/sbin/dovecot
    root 18203 0.0 0.1 2236 880 ? S 20:28 0:00 dovecot-auth

For pop3 I've changed POP3DSTART=NO in /usr/lib/courier-imap/etc/pop3d, I thought that'd prevent it from running, but no...

So, question #1 is how do I get rid of those services?

    Question #2:

Support mentioned that root and scripts on my site need some services to send mail. I'm not sureif I remember that part correctly, but I thought php sends mail with sendmail binary, does that need exim or any other service running?

And in general, granted that my mail server is google, what do I need to keep alive on my vps so it functions properly?

    VPS box is running - cPanel 11.24.5-R37946 - WHM 11.24.2 - X 3.9 CENTOS 5.3 i686 virtuozzo.

Question#1: service dovecot stop && chkconfig dovecot off
Question#2: the sendmail program should be fine for sending out emails. Make sure to add some SPF ipv4 record for the server. Also know that email bounces won't be received since the server wouldn't have an MTA listening on port 25 (sendmail makes connections to port 25 on remote server but it doesn't listen on port 25 the way you want it configured).

Be sure to have rdns setup on your server IP so that outgoing email makes it intact to the destination inbox.

    Good luck.

    Thanks a bunch

As far as I understand I have to create spf record on

I figure my spf will be real complicated, because I have to add my 2 domains, then my home(?) and comcast because use them for my outgoing mail and plus google gmail can send emails for my domains... That is, if I understood what spf is and how it works.
