AMD Opterons..
I'll start this thread off by saying I know absolutely NOTHING about AMD.
So, here's my question:
Quad-Core AMD Opteron™ Model 2378 (2.4GHz, 75W, 4x512KB L2, 6MB L3)
How/what intel CPU does that compare to? According to the AMD PDF I have here, it says the 2360 SE is comparable to a Xeon X5470. The 2376 is further up in the pdf and has nothing next to it to compare to.
Would the 2376 beat an X5470?
EDIT// I am going to be using virtualization on the server.Last edited by Dougy; 08-08-2009 at 08:48 AM. Reason: proc update

Hey,
[Dual CPU] Quad-Core AMD Opteron 2378
Benchmark: 5820
Intel Core i7 920 @ 2.67GHz
Benchmark: 5439
and then
Intel Core i7 940 @ 2.93GHz
Benchmark: 6077
So somewhere between them
For the Xeon:
[Dual CPU] Intel Xeon X5470 @ 3.33GHz
Benchmark: 11555

Jason -- Those are Dual CPU boxes... It sounds like Dougy is working with a single CPU setup.

Synthetic benchmarks mean nothing. The price is very good, so you may want to try it out, but there is no way it will beat an X5470 on anything other than price and temperature.

So, would you recommend I go ahead and spend the extra (fairly decent amount of money) for dual E5420's or should I go with the Opterons? It'd be for a virtualization box.

Dual E5420s are much better.

to put things in perspective, AMD is about 2 generations behind intel's latest (with the advent of their 34nm chips)

AMD has fallen behind the game in recent years unfortunately.
I'd definitely go with the 5420s. If you can push for Nehalem 5520s. Although it shouldn't matter too much.SonicVPS.com - Automated VPS Provisioning

$229.99 for the quad core 2ghz 5504 Nehalem at newegg. Even those smoke that Opteron even though they are stripped down. If you can afford the 5520, you will not be disappointed.
You could always buy a dual board and One 5520 and add the second one later if needed. You really have not said what you are going to be doing with these virt boxes. You may not even need dual quad core horsepower.

The 5520's - are they comparable or better than the 5420?
