    'Dead' baby wakes before funeral

A premature baby declared dead by doctors at a hospital in Paraguay was found to be alive hours later when he was taken home for a funeral wake.

Jose Alvarenga said he had discovered his son was alive after he heard crying from the box in which he was placed.

The baby is now back at the same hospital's intensive care unit and reported to be in a stable condition.

The head of paediatric care at the hospital said a doctor had not properly checked the infant's vital signs.

"This is a very unusual case," Ernesto Weber told the AFP news agency, adding that an investigation into the incident would be carried out.

A doctor who works at the hospital's maternity unit said staff had tried to revive the baby for an hour before declaring him dead.

"His pulse was so low that it was undetectable," Aida Notario said.

According to medical records, the baby weighed only 500g (17.6oz).

The smallest on record was an American baby who weighed just 280g (10oz), born at less than 22 weeks.

Normally when there is medical or health issue, specially with kids, I think any parent would not want to take a chance on a doc with already one hit .. or one 'maybe' hit.

Put yourself in the patients shoe, would you want to take still go to that doc, if you knew there were other choices available?

I'm just glad they got the baby before anything worst happened... i.e the funeral actually took place!

I just hope the baby has a good life now, really hate hearing stories about ill/dying babies.

Ugh, just imagine waking up being in a coffin underground.

I can not think of anything worse - Who knows maybe the child can have a good start to life money wise!

But thats awful, reminds me of horror films.

Wow. I can almost understand why you would be confused as to whether or not the infant was alive or not.

My sisters first daughter weighed only 1lb 4oz at birth (about 3 oz difference). My niece. Anyway, my sisters wedding band stretched around my nieces arm well enough to fit both of her miniature wrist through, all the way up to her elbow.
This little baby, my niece, absolutely fit in one of my hands. Scariest feeling in the world, having all that life literally in your hand. When she was born, she was given extreme care. I had to go through a 3 stage decontamination process before I could even be released into the room where I could see her through a case. Eventually more and more wires were removed, and she began to take weight... We were able to hold her...and after about 4 months my sister got to bring her home.

That little girl started this world, a step ahead of the rest of us... with 2 millions USD in debt!
She is now 7, and healthy and developing as a normal child. (Ive seen many premature births with slight disabilities - She seems to be average)

Can you even imagine how happy the parents were? Interesting story.. good thing they heard him before it was too late..

  19. My god, that's really shocking!
Can you imagine that, think your new born baby was dead ready to say goodbye! Then it wakes up, if that was me I think I would have to beat the doctor up lol for nearly letting me kill my baby!

    Money well spent IMO.

I love your story. I'm happy to hear she's doing well at age 7. She certainly has a unique Preface to her autobiography when she eventually writes it...
