    Private Usenet Server

Terabyte Unlimited and Gibson Reasearch Corporation each have their own usenet servers. I don't know if they have their own boxes or whether they are buying a service, but they definitely control the access to the server.

Is there is hosting company that will allow me to have a private usenet service? I don't want to own the box, but I do want to control the server.

If there are no longer any companies providing the service, does anyone know what software to use? The newsgroups would be text only.

I assume you need to ask that question to the your particular web hosting company or to the prospective ones and specify all details. That is not comonplace for the each web hosting service provider

Windows hosting scares me to death. I was hoping that someone here offers shared NNTP server hosting on a Linux box.

None of my hosts allows NNTP servers. Can someone recommend a host that will allow me to have one?

Are you wanting to just run a server for our own private use? I mean, for use for select individuals, with controlled groups, or are you wanting to receive a full usenet news stream, and allow select individuals to use your server?

If you are just looking to use usenet, there are many, many free portals that allow access to pretty much everything but the porn.

I'm not understanding what exactly you want.

I want to run my own usenet server for text only newsgroups. The two companies I mentioned in the first post are doing just that. They don't have a lot of volume.

You could maybe get a cheap VPS and setup a feed. That would provide plenty of bandwidth, space, and processing. Most any VPS provider would allow this. FiveBean has a 6 buck (last time i checked, price fluctuates with then) VPS that would work well for this. That's actually cheaper than buying a clean feed from a commercial usenet provider.

If you want something like that I would suggest that you go with a vps server. So you wouldn't own the box but you would have root access to your "virtual server"
