1and1 fee for cancelling?
I canceled my hosting plan with 1and1 about 2-3 weeks before it ended to try to make sure they didn't charge me for the next chunk of time, and now I just got an invoice for $1.45 for "Cancellation of Invoice." Is this 1and1 trying to screw me? I couldn't find any information about it.

Hmm...could be a ploy to get extra months out of you. They will probably say something like...'well we did receive your cancellation request, but you didn't pay off your cancellation fee, so we continued to bill your account because we figured you still wanted it.'
Best bet would be to contact their billing to see what the deal is.

Considering 1and1 will send you to collections who will whack on a late fee, I'd just pay the $1.45 and leave.

Wow, this was my bad entirely. They are *crediting* me 1.45, not charging me since I ended my account early. I was just looking for something bad to happen from all the horror stories and didn't even notice the '-' symbol. I gotta say they answered my e-mail to billing very quickly too. So far even after canceling my experience with 1and1 has been good. Too bad they're raising prices.

Well at least it wasn't bad like you thought Has to be one of the first positive 1&1 cancellation stories I've seen.

1and1 are 'OK' as long as you strictly adhere to there procedures, any variation from there procedures results in the messes we see too often at WHT

I recently closed my account early and was credited for it from 1and1.
It did supprise me, to be honest.
I was a customer for 5 years and they were not too bad but they really don't like you using the disk space they give you...haha.

When compared to some of their direct competitors, they seem quite good to me, performance and uptime wise. I don't know about canceling procedures and given the stories I was a bit worried about that. Nice to hear they're decent and give prorated refunds.

I had some decent sized video files that I had recorded with my camera years back. The files were static files that I never touched (had forgotten about them). These were clean videos (before someone says anything) such as recording younger family members with diet coke + mentos.
I received an e-mail a few months ago after all those years that I shouldn't be using the home hosting plan as a storage server and is in violation with the ToS. Needless to say, I sent them a professionally upset e-mail in return.
I never had an issue with them until that point so I must admit that is a good record. They were stable.
Overselling by extreme amounts is bad.
Edit: Oh and I had a few zip files of application installs I kept out there for quick access.
That is probably what upset them but in theory, I was paying for the 200 GB they offered me to use...
