Thanks for that link Sam, wasn't even aware of their status page lol. Must be a pretty large attack to be keeping twitter up and down like this, sounds like they have their work cut out for em.

Here is a question:
Why do people do DoS attacks? I mean what do they have to gain? it is simply bothering tons of people.
If there was something for them to gain, than I suppose in a crude way it can still be justified by them - but nothing to gain, investment of time in setting up an attack & annoyance to many many users. Whats can be the purpose??

Scummy, low-life pieces of crap. It might sound mean but it's the truth. ANYONE with any common sense isn't going to do such a thing. Unfortunately idiots DO exist and will always be doing this type of crap.
As for what they have to gain, I don't understand that either... bragging rights!?

Well I am assuming that to cause a site like Twitter and many other high profile sites, it would take some skills and knowledge. Now assuming someone is having that much knowledge I would also hope they might also have common sense of rational thinking of gain-loss. Comeon after-all life is made up of time and to do something totally useless - just doesn't add up. I am trying to think - but damn can't really figure out how such thinking work.. damn

I think stuff like twitter is part of a conspiracy to stop all those unemployed people from rioting and eating each other. They can 'follow' chubby little pop tarts, and z-list movie actors, and tweep, purp and toot to their hearts content.

Looks like they've been back up since the morning. I'm curious about how much bandwidth they use... In theory, it's quite a low-bandwidth service. (And their images seem mostly hosted on S3, so they wouldn't even use their bandwidth.)
That's one theory. I found it invaluable in getting advice from other sysadmins in diagnosing a provider outage last night, so it has uses aside from preventing unemployed cannibals.

I think DDoS attacks are a waste of human energy as well. It's just like junk mail and spam. It's a complete hassle to everyone inolved. I bet postal workers hate deliverying junk mail more than I hate throwing it out.
Anyways, DDoS attacks really screw up your day. Think of all the people it affects: twitter employees, advertisers, ISPs, kids on summer vacation, etc.
I personally hate twitter as much as reality TV, but DDoS attacks are so petty.

And now we know why:

DDOS is sure becoming popular.

People that DDoS are so sad.
One of my favorite forums is currently undergoing DDoS, and it's been well over 2 months.
