I'm currently on a VPS but I think I'm paying too much for what I need and am wondering if a shared environment would suit my web needs. I don't need full control of my server whatsoever as long as php, phpmyadmin, and mysql are all up to date.
My site that I run on the VPS gets about 500,000 page views a month and consumes about 30-40 gigs a month of bandwidth... and about 300,000 hits. I only use about 10 gigs of space at the maximum but if I move to a shared host, I can use about 3-5 gigs. I use 5 MySQL databases.
I also use the server for development purposes with other projects and host a few more small sites. Any recommendations much appreciated! UPDATE: I'm looking to pay about $100-150 a year max. Right now, I'm paying about $500.

It depends how much you're willing to pay for a shared host. Judging by the amount of disk space and bandwidth you're currently using, you may need to pay more than you think for a reliable shared host that will allow you to use that much.
Well the main thing is I don't really want to maintain it anymore, but I don't want to pay someone hourly to upgrade everything for me. Also, I really hate the PLESK panel, but Cpanel costs a lot more. I'm running a custom site that I built from scratch.. no Wordpress or CMS's. Essentially... I'm trying to save some money here and maintain good performance. I don't think I'm using the full potential of the VPS and nor do I think I really need it.
I keep my resources down to a minimum, so I don't use a lot. I just use FTP to connect and I don't really care where the server is as long as I can upload and download from it quickly. With my MySQL databases, most of the action is just reading from them... so that is in mind with the page views stated before.
What do you mean exactly? Currently, I think I'm on one of the cheapest reliable VPS's around... for 39 bucks a month. Am I wrong? I'm just looking to pay somewhere between $10 and $20 bucks a month if possible for what I need. Do you think if I did this, I would lose major performance and my site would be terribly slow?
I can't give you a secure answer about this, but based in what you said, you should be fine in a shared host, just be sure to avoid those offering unlimited or huge space/bandwidth (are more restrictives on the CPU/IO/Inodes usage).
Thanks for the suggestion. Also, I've been trying to find information in this forum but there is no "central location" of any kind of web host ratings!!! Does anyone have a link to a site or forum here that rates shared hosting?...legit information?
Luckily there's not such thing on this forum and you should not rely on those "top 10 hosts" rating since mostly are based in affiliate payments.
I suggest you to make a shortlist of 5-6 host fitting your real needs and the research about them here.
