Personally, I believe it is all a galoot!
Seriously, Who can really predict the future?
Sighs, The world will end wen it ends.
You think 26 will be depressing, I'll be 52 in 2012!!

Yeah, I reckon so too.
I somewhat disagree that there will be another Y2k. The first one never even eventuated
- I am am attracted that much to an elephants ass than I am to a Y2k. I am a future geek you could say, I have like 1000 + images of Sci-Fi events and possibilities on my laptop.

Sounds pretty interesting and I'm actually hoping to go to the 2012 Olympics.

In the year 2012,
Windows 10 will be out, Exchange will be replaced with Gmail Professional, and Mrs Clinton will have built a time machine to go back and kill Obama after he runs for a third term.

Freaky !
Looking at the last few posts, it appears WHT has created a time machine,
so I reckon the mods should take a trip to 2012, come back here and 'report'.
and for anyone daft enough to want to go to the 2012 London olympics,
dont forget to book your tickets before the end of 2013 !_____________________________________________________________

I agree with ATH-Sean. I have been fascinated with groups and theories that predict the future, just because it gives you something to think about.
But when all is set and done, I do not believe that any human has the power to predict the future, regardless if modern science have proved the Mayans wrong or not.Last edited by VN-Ken; 08-13-2009 at 12:32 PM.

December 12, 2012 is the winter solstice. Thats when the Earth is pointing most away from the sun in the Northern hemisphere. Its the far-right position of the earth in this diagram:
(as you can see, the Earth always points in the same direction, exactly like a gyroscope, but since its at an angle, sometimes the top half points toward the sun [summer] and sometimes away [winter]). That happens once a year.
The sun will also be on the "galactic equator"; that is, the center-line of the galaxy. Its basically a line down the center of the Milky Way, like this:
That doesnt happen every year. The earth is wobbling, very slowly, which causes the sun to move up and down relative to this line every 26,000 years or so. Right now it's particularly close.
The Mayans knew it would be that close, and in fact they based their whole calendar on it. Their calendar is based on two cycles, the 365 day calendar watching the Sun and a 260 day calendar watching Venus. Together, they make up a 52 year cycle. They also have longer cycles of 400 years, and they designed their calendar of 13 400-year-cycles to run out when that conjunction happens.
(That puts the beginning back in 3114 BC, which was a date of no particular astronomical interest except that it began on the solstice. That's what you get when you count back cycles of Venus from a Sun-based event. It's like when the West decided to start its calendar at 1 six centuries after the year "1".)
You won't really see much on December 12, 2012. It'll be the solstice, which means it'll be dark if you're in the North and sunny if you're in the Southern hemisphere. The Sun will be in the middle of the Milky Way, but you can't really see that because when the Sun is out you can't see the stars.
What will happen? Nothing. People will be Christmas shopping. It'll be a Friday. The Mayans would have to get a new calendar, but they stopped using the old calendar a long time ago anyway.

I think it's going to be a great movie. It's from the same people who made Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow. Here's the 2012 trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cyCCd8MCcZY

I really don't think anything will happen in 2012. And I believe someone mentioned something about asteroids... we just need to build us a Terminator. Then we'll see just how tough nature is compared to Arnold.
