Could you paste some code?

I assume your using some floating divs, make sure you set them with a fixed width and are cleared/floated properly.

When did IE start working

There is only one way to ensure your site won't break across browsers - code like it's 1999!

There is nothing wrong with table-based layouts

IE has always worked. It just works a certain way. Just like every other browser.

The problem is the lunatic fringe who code and review a site using firefox, fire it up on the web, and then cry that it doesn't work.

It's not fair to cry when it was never coded for, or review in the browser of choice for most visitors.

IE is a bitch, almost always had problems with it, but you have to fix it.
Try using an if statement for IE like in:

<!--[if IE 7]>
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="style/ie7.css" />
<![endif]-->

and do the changes only on ie7.css , depending on changes of course, sometimes its not needed to use a condition "hack".
