    Looking to sell stock photography

    Hi,
Recently I purchased a new camera, I have taken loads of photos of plants, general scenery, seaside images, forestry etc

What i would like to do is sell the photos too designers and blog writers, however the big boys like fotolia and istockphoto all want a commission and basically want to pay around 20 cents per photo,

What I am thinking of doing is creating a site and selling the images for between 50 cents and 1 dollar each.

Does anyone have any recommendations or ideas?
Would people be interested in them if i sold them through the design>offered here on WHT?

Hmm, if you post samples of the pictures (e.g. visibily watermarked), perhaps someone will express interest based on what they see.

We don't know, otherwise, how good the photos are!

I'm no expert, but I'm just wondering if there are any legal issues with publishing photos with people in them? (unless of course you have their written authority to publish)

There all family members, that bloke near the steps is my dad, and sat in the deckchair to the left is my sister, they have given permission.
I am so impressed by the picture with the bumble bees how good quality it was from a £200 Kodak camera

Hi, I would say the first 2 are fine, but the 3rd isen't great compared to the others
there is no main focus to the photo, if that makes sense.

With the first you have the huts as the main focus on the white sand, the second you have a bee thn the third is "nothing".

I really like the Bee photo and my best advise would be to go to a company like fotolia and get accepted, put that Bee pic on your application. your bound to make more sales through them sites.

If they have people in them barring mass public shots, you must have releases for them. Anything with logo's in it must have permission for use when selling the image, such as a picture of McDonalds arches. Anything that can be considered IP cannot be resold without permission.

Welcome to the world of photography, its a complete pain in the rear.

If you search in Flickr you will find so many people who can shoot really well. It is tough trying to sell unless you are extremely good and the images are rare and unique to find. Long back iStockPhoto rejected some pics of flowers I submitted...they said they already have too many flower photos But a closeup image of a chrome plated spanner on a Photoshop created background earned me a few dollars.

I shot these with a Nikon 10mpx point-and-shoot camera. I want to get a Nikon D300 with some good lens and lights

There is another possible way to make money

    http://www.pdphoto.org/

See this site which has some superb photos...all released under Creative Commons license. The photographer is probably making lot of money from the ads on the website. The site has been in existence for many years and the photos are never removed.

Right, cool, thanks for all the advise there, I already knew about the copyright regarding things in the background, your example of the gold arches has made me peckish

Apart from that my main question is unanswered, which stock site offers the best rate of pay? or is there a way to sell them on website with some sort of script?

    Connor,

In the UK there is nothing wrong with taking photos in a public space and selling them, look at the news or newspapers they do it all the time. I think it's a good idea, I haven't ever seen such a site designed for the UK/EU before, might be an idea to target that rather than the US market which everyone seems to hit all the time.

Those little cheap point and click digitals will get some decent images. Here's one I shot in my backyard, natural light (under my deck) with a $100 2MP camera.

Saw one this weekend, a $3K Nikon (just for the body) with stupidly large lens that I'm lusting after.

Ive seen some where the body is about £5000 - In the US thats about $11,000+

Hmm I might think about starting a stock website then,
Any Ideas on scripts already out there?

Not anymore, as long as you take the picture from a public street or sidewalk a Model Consent is not required. Same with Corporate Logos.

You need to find something that sets you apart from the other 10 million stock photographers out there. The world of Photography is an awesome one, but you need to find the proper nitch. Buying a POS (Point and Shoot) digital camera and thinking you are taking good pictures is not it. I am not saying you're doing that, but a lot of people who claim to do stock photography do exactly that.

I buy Canon, and have a 20D, 30D, 40D, 50D and a Mark III that shoots 10 FPS. I have also invested thousands in lenses, my favorate is my 300 MM F/2.8L IS, which works amazingly for Football and Baseball at night. Equipment isn't all of what a picture is, but it actually has a lot to do with it.

I'm not one of those people looking for a get rich quick idea, just thought I would like to take my hobby further, rather than having photos sit here on my hard drive I let people give me a little bit of money to make good use out of them.

Good deal, that's never a bad idea. Although, NEVER give photos away for free, never, never, never, never.... NEVER!!!! You will the be known as "The photographer who gave me a free pictures" and they will try to milk you for every free picture they can get.

I wouldnt try to compete with other stock sites mate.

Your best bet is to join a current one, get accepted and start making some money without needing to spend time or money on advertising the stock sie in the first place.

That is a valid point. Sometimes you will sell significantly more at $0.20 through an established web site than you would ever sell at $0.50-$1.00 yourself, anyway.
