    Virus / Malware protection

    Hey all,

What would be the ultimate (free?) package of programs to place on a friends laptop to ensure protection? He's fairly new to computers and it scares me to think of him browsing Google for free stuff.

    I generally use:

    AVG Free
    MalwareBytes Anti-Malware

With that said, I know for certain AVG has let stuff slip by before. I've witnessed fixing computers for family and friends.

So again, is there a better combo I should be using?

You can try Avira, I used it before I paid for NOD32. Lavasoft Offers free spy/malware scans. Another I still use is SpyBot - Search and Destroy. All of these have a free version or are simply free.

edit I forgot about Comodo if you want to give him a software firewall.

Linux is the best protection you can offer

I used to use avg adaware/spybot when I was on winblows, but none of them are perfect, including the paying ones.

lol, this guy on Linux would be like me trying to build a house. Not gonna happen

Looks like I'll toss my standard two on there with a couple extra's. Between the lot, hopefully he'll be safe as possible.

So Avast would replace AVG? This sounds promising since I've seen 'enough' get past AVG...

do you have any virus? has your computer ran slow? had any websites hacked?

if you can say no to 2 out of 3 of these or all 3 I would say your virus scanner is doing fine.

I have heard NOD32 is quite good, Personally I have never tried it. I have tried AVG and it sucked so much I had to remove it from my computer

I am now using Trend Micro Internet Security PRO 2009 abd are having no issues. Though I will most likely dump it and invest in Kaspersky IS 2010.. Awesome.

Kaspersky : It's kind of a RAM hog (maybe for me at least), how ever it is one of the best AVs out there. But, you can only get the 30 day trial
NOD32: One of the best I've used so far. However, it's only for 30 day trial haha.
AVG: It's alright, probably the most well known free AV out there, you can stick with it.
AVast: I'd recommend this. It has lots of virus definitions and can usually solve any issue for me.

    These are just my opinions
