Hello, wondering if anyone can help? I rebooted my vps via webmin and it hasn't come back on. So now if i go to the url in my browser i get a can't find server error. However, i can login to file manager using winscp. It's the same url. Any ideas how i can restart the server?
I'm not sure what is meant by SSH. (I'm not too good at all this!) With winscp i can access files and do what i like to them, but my sites are just not visible. On winscp there is an option located under the session link called 'open terminal' If i click that, it tells me current sftp session does not support your command request....and asks if i want to open a separate shell session. If i select yes, it will not log in. Is this what you meant or something else? Any help would be useful as the last thing i want to do is contact the provider!
Okay,i've figured out what you mean now i've downloaded putty but it asks for my username which i can enter, then it asks for the password, but doesn't allow me to enter the password. It just shows the cursor and it does not matter which key i type, it just won't write it. Now what?
Are you able to login to the VPS?
please provide correct info to putty.
Hostname/ip address and ssh port no.(default 22)
Please enter correct username(default root) and password.
After successful login you will see Last login info(Date,Time)
Hi thanks for everyones replies so far, i must say that i find this the most friendly and helpful of forums of any kind that i've ever used on the net.
I did download putty and figured that out about it not showing the pasword, thanks to ^^ above user! Now what happens is it logs in but immediately closes putty. I used a web cam to record the screen because everything happened so fast, and it is logging in, tells me i have new mail (?)!
But immediately closes. Desperate for all the help you guys could give me because it's going to be a big hassle with my provider otherwise. (it's supposed to be unmanaged and they can be really ratty!)
it seem that you have problem with your login setting, i guess .bashrc file.
maybe it's time to contact support and tell them what you wrote above. it's nothing you can do remotely if you can login smoothly via ssh.
based on story you wrote above, it's better to contact support to solve your problem rather loosing your entire system.
I was fearing that may be the only answer, i guess there comes a time when a mans gotta do what a mans gotta do! ( i dread these people at support!)
But regardless of that, thanks to everyone for your help, i am extremeley surprised by this forum because i've never come across such a willingly helpful bunch of people before!
Just as an addendum, i finally logged in! Discovered that it won't log in whilst winscp is logged on. But alas, i gave the reboot command, it said system is going to reboot now, but it still hasn't come back on???? Really no idea why, if anyone has any last minute reprieves it would be handy, going to leave contacting support until the morning!
thanks jedito. support never answer before 12pm (my time) and it's 4.30 am my time, so i'm still having a look around to see if i can figure it out. But it does seem to me that the server is running. I've tried several things with putty using commands i found on the net and if i'm reading it right, it's working only i can't see it! I did something which allowed me to see the running processes and it says there's 14 processes running, i pinged the server and it had a rapid response, so what i don't understand is a.) how is winscp logging in to the same ip address that can't be found in my browser, and how can i successfully ping the server if it's not running? I have tons to learn i know, but i wish i could make sense of it. I hate being stumped like this!
