We celebrate secretary appreciation day here but not sysadmin day

Guess it doesn't really help considering it's pretty much a 1 man IT op here...

Not so happy "Sys Admin" day for me here...

Just got laid off from my real job after 4 years - and it's my daughter's first birthday...

Boy, when it rains - it pours - but happy SysAdmin day to the rest of you!

I have been on Parental Leave for 6 months and was due to go back on Tuesday the 4th of August. Got a call from the HR lady this morning telling me that due to reduced staff and the like - I was asked not to return and I was being laid off with three weeks severance.

I was a Systems Administrator for a large Geomatics company managing over 130 Physical servers, 60+ VM's and over 850TB of storage. I was the only IT guy there for the past four years and they fired and hired two since I have been gone.

I don't know what else really to say outside of the fact that I am totally shell shocked. I built the infrastructure, both Data Centers, etc. and then this...

A Grateful Dad, could you see it coming? Always be close to your boss and be alert, if you are on the chopping list you will definitely get a wind. No company likes their main employee taking such a long leave because in 6 months they can get another replacement.

I don't know how companies like this think they will get by without a IT person.... Hopefully they will realize soon that they need someone and hire you back... Then again you never know what's going on at the company, they may be getting ready to go under...
