    * About Low End Servers

    I just wanted to say (it just came over me sorry) that I am a total fan of low end servers. They cost 30-50$/month (FDC/UnitedColo etc) and they give you the convenience of having your very own server. You can fool around, test stuff, host friends&family, use it as backup or DNS and do whatever you want in general without feeling bad for the 150-200$ a server NORMALLY costs.

    Just speaking my mind here cause I got 4+1 of those and every box has various stuff running or testing etc. in a way that it MUST be all on it's own box. And there I am thinking that those 5 boxes together are 220$/month out of my pocket and NOT 600-800$.

    Well, the point is that it is just GREAT to be able to test everything out there etc without feeling $$$-regrets. I LOVE LOW END SERVERS!

    Cheers

    best regards,
    Ok, as a hosting point o fview they are awesome too cause it is better and FASTER to host 50 clients on each LowEnd Server instead of 150-200 on a "normal" one. And with CPs like H-Sphere that charge PER DOMAIN and NOT per server it is even possible to do hosting wiht those machines. ANd yes, more redundancy you bet!

    Yes they had some VIA's at that price but I cannot be specific since I am incorporated with them... you know "self-advertisement rule"

    Back in the day I used cheap equipment (before I got into hosting), had nothing but config problems all the time.

    A cheap server's load average can jump high over nothing too. It sucks. I used a cobalt raq a couple years ago. Then I switched to a p3 and it was like moving from a saturn to a ferrari.

    Cobalt RAQs were not meant to be cheap servers, they were all outdated until the RAQ550s.

    Ahm guys: I am NOT talking CHEAP equipment. I am talking LOW END equipment, which means PII for example. The quality in my boxes for example is the best. Asus motherboard, brand RAM etc ... BUT yesterdays technology: Low End. And therefore 50$/month and not 150$, that's all

    i'm running a dual p2-350 w/ 1gb RAM and loving it.

    i think for people who just need a box to host a few sites with good bandwidth, new users, small "hobby" resellers (emphasis on small), and just people who want to play with a dedicated box those budget boxes are great.

    i too love them.

    Heh, honestly a DUAL (even if P2) and 1GB (!!!) of RAM is not Low-End to me
