    * LT migrating out of Savvis?!

I have 2 servers on LT SAVVIS data center (through Server4Sale).

Today I received mails from them that LT is migrating out of Savvis and so my servers need to be transported/built(!) at the DataBank facility. And the server IPs will get changed.

If the servers requires a build, that will mean ill have to configure/reinstall everything again. Thats apart from moving the client accounts from the old server.

Anyone else received the notice from LT?

Odd, I thought this move had already happened, since I remember reading something similar. Verify the mail headers to make sure it's legitimate.

    Headers look clean (from Server4Sale)

Thanks for the advice though =P

Well you will definitely require an IP change if they are moving you to another facility. I would suggest seeing if they will migrate you on to a new server already pre-built in the other facility before they take your solution offline. Also now would be a good time if you were looking to move else where to see if another provider can provide you with a free migration. After all the IP change will be inevitable.

I do not think you will have reconfigure everything - they will just physically transfer your server and only the IP's need to be reconfigured.

Question: does this mean they will have only 1 datacenter (Databank)? Ok, I think 1 more since they accquired FastServers.

I also got this notice today.

I'm confused what they mean about migrating.

Does that mean they are just physically moving the old server into the new datacenter (Databank)? or are they starting from scratch with a new server at Databank...meaning i would need to install all the things i have on there again??

I think physically moving the server over would be easier and just switching the IPs...rather then configuring/installing everything on the new server!

    This is such a P.I.T.A. !!!

Migrating means the data will need to be transferred onto the new box in the other data center. You should find out if they are going to do this for free for you or if you will have to do this yourself.

Have you asked them to migrate you free as a result of the data center closing? If your not familiar with data migrations, why deal with the haste and potentially lose data when they have a technical support team that can generate an adequate migration plan.

Migrating doesn't mean your data will need to be transferred or does it mean they will have to renumber. In this case, we don't know if they will have to migrate their data or if their box will just be physically moved. However the need to change ips just reflects poor network planning or the unwillingness to merge the networks and play with vlan-re-routing etc. etc..

Yes, they will do it for free...

I will talk to them about that but i am not using the server to host any domains, its hosting software so i guess im kind of lucky in that sense...

But for those who have domains and other things i feel for them.

They are NOT physically moving the box...basically they are moving everyone who is with Saavis over to Databank.

glad they will do it free, I have worked for them and know how they accommodate with migrations when they close down a facility.

Ohh wow, so they are actually forcing everyone to do an actual data migration.

Is Saavis being close down? This is kind of sudden and caught me off guard...its really a pain to have to do all this when everything was running smoothly before.

If Savvis was shutting down the DC I would have thought LT might want to buy it or take it over. But I doubt savvis is shutting down, savvis just is probably raising the costs to a level to be not conducive to business anymore for LT and LT could be being priced out. Or just consolidation into one facility instead of two. Would save $$$$ on personnel.

I am sure Saavis is not closing down, but LT might be removing its servers or limiting any further development in that facility. This type of stuff happens with hosting providers that move out of one Data Center to upscale to another.

I would not be surprised if Savvis was increasing pricing at contract renewal time to increase revenue per sqft. Afaik, that facility has been full for years.. I doubt it would be something they'd consider shutting down.

Moving the server means more downtime but less configuration work.

Having a new server ready over there (different server) means less downtime but more configuration work.

    It's a trade-off between the two.

It could also be that the Savvis facility is not carrier neutral and LT saw a bandwidth deal they like that Savvis won't match.

Its a trade off that should not happen in the first place. Now, they are saying that some servers actually have to be transported over and dont have an option of building a new one. This will result in 3 hour downtime. One of my servers with them falls under this category. Again, P.I.T.A ...time to re-evaluate my server situation with them. I can't even believe im still paying what i'm paying for a P4 after looking at all the webhosting deals out there.

Be careful with those deals you're finding so you don't end up regretting anything. It's understandable that they can't setup a new P4 for you, but don't they have any option for you for some newer hardware?

If you have to change ips, you should definitely look around.

Netdepot has killer deals in Dallas - I know you can pick up a 9550 quad core with a 10 mb unmetered port for 149 a month and it has a 500 gig harddrive and 8 gigs of ram.

Netdepot does an awesome job and you would be very happy there.

No options that i know of. I will be careful but im seeing deals for Dual Xeons 2.8 for CHEAPER than what im paying for a P4 on equivalent networks.

Jay - Savvis is definately not shutting it down - I heard a few weeks ago that particular facility is virtually full - so I think miguelsinglehops's speculation of price increases is probably a good guess.
