What's your favorite linux distro?
What's your favorite Linux distro? I'm asking because I'm thinking about getting somewhat away from Windows, not because I hate it but because I want to try something different

CentOS
It's what I always use, and I think for lots of other users too.

I'm pretty sure Ubuntu is pretty popular with a GUI interface.

It is not stupid, it is just safety measure in case someone else doesn't know how to operate and mass up everything. There should be an option that you may login as root.

Well, Debian is identical to Ubuntu for the most part, so maybe consider that if you like Debian's functionality. I have it dual booted on here. FWIW, Fedora is garbage, at least last time I had used it. The old fedora releases were nice but the recent ones are horrible.
CentOS is VERY minimal if you install it and Gnome, but it does work great for something like a DC console.AS395558

Its my fav from past 2 years. I love its KISS approach
But you can always enable root login in Ubuntu if you wish

Glad to hear that. I think when I tried OpenSuse 11 it didn't support my network card, so if something doesn't work on your distro, you could either try a different version of it or use a completely different one. OpenSuse / Fedora / Ubuntu are quite similar, and I would recommend all of them.

Debian is my favorite distro for production servers (stability-focus). Ubuntu would be my favorite distro for development or desktop, since the packages are generally more recent. Command-wise everything is basically the same.

Nothing beats Ubuntu for now. Earlier I used Knoppix and it was very good in detecting hardware. But now I find ubuntu also good at this. Very refreshing interface with graphical effects.
