VPS Support for a Win 2003 / Coldfusion 7+ / MS SQL 2005
I am looking for a shared or even a good VPS hosting company that supports coldfusion 7 or higher, mssql 2000 or higher, and on a windows 2003 server. It is primarily going to be used for development purposes so it would need practically no more then a 1gb bandwidth, 512mb memory, at least 10 gbs or higher for the mssql database size if there is one, and at least 30gbs for the harddrive. If anyone knows of any I would appreciate it greatly. Currently we are paying $100 for a lot of specs we don't need with our current host so we are looking for a more cost effective and reputable company.

Do you have preference for any particular Virtualization technology? I'd recommend you to go for either Xen or Hyper-V based VPS for true virtualization.

How does the virtualization technology matter? Can you explain a bit more?

With Hyper-V and Xen, you will be assured of guaranteed resources since they do not allow overselling. Also, they provide true hardware virtualization and high level of isolation from other virtual machines on the physical server. Hence, with these technologies, you can remain assured that your services will not be affected by other resource intensive services running on the same server.

Apart from I/O and CPU which can be oversold. As well as bandwidth of course. Hyper-V is the way to go if you can afford it as it will let you install the same software that is compatible with a dedicated server. However if it is only a test vps as mentioned then Virtuozzo may be sufficient. How much is it to run coldfusion and can this be obtained under a developer license?

You may want to look at a Virtuozzo solution. It virtualizes the OS and not the server. The hardware node requires only one installation of Windows and hence only a single Windows license. This also means that the RAM you're allocated won't be used to load the OS, and its less expensive to deploy resulting in lower prices. With a Hyper-V config, much of youRAM will be used up loading Windows. It only takes about 35 mb to load Windows into a Virtuozzo container. You get all the advantages of a standalone server such as RDP. The only major restrictions are you cannot enable services that are not enabled at the node level (but you can disable them).
As a Windows Admin I prefer Hyper-V, especially for onsite installations. But for affordable hosted solutions I prefer Virtuozzo. (Besides, I don't think Hyper-V has a server 2003 install base)

That's true. It does require Windows 2008 (Hyper-V enabled) host OS where guest OS can be Win 2003 (in addition to many others).

Yeah, I was thinking from the owner of the node which doesn't apply here. OP still gets 2003.
