    Is this Normal for a Dedicated?

    Hi all,

    top - 22:14:59 up 12:52, 2 users, load average: 0.07, 0.11, 0.15
    Tasks: 141 total, 2 running, 139 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie
    Cpu(s): 17.1%us, 1.0%sy, 0.0%ni, 81.9%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st
    Mem: 2026544k total, 1870360k used, 156184k free, 88940k buffers
    Swap: 4200988k total, 112k used, 4200876k free, 1020780k cached

    Above is copy of Top from my server...

    I have 20-30 user up online, is this normal for a dual core with 2 GB? where this memory is going am confused only 140-150 mb free.

    That is perfectly normal; as long you don't see your SWAP increase; your OS is just reserving the memory; and shows it as being in use. Looks like a very nice load on your server.

    if swap increase then only u need to worrie

    ty so much i got relief now

    i thought its not good, as when i didn't setup apache on it, memory uses were like 150-200 MB only and 1600 MB were free, it only happened after the installation of apache and running it up.

    free -m is the key.

    [email protected]:~$ free -m
                 total       used       free     shared    buffers     cached
    Mem:         12087       5836       6251          0        197       2664
    -/+ buffers/cache:       2973       9113
    Swap:         3153          0       3153
    Means that 2973MB is in use of 12GB total ram.

    Linux caches the memory.
