    Crazy Captchas

There have been a few images of just terrible captchas floating across the internet lately, and I'd like to add one of my own.

I was just meandering across HostLaunch (I get bored :/ ) and on the signup page I found this:

At least I'm not getting spam

What in the hell is that! That's funny. I'm getting quite annoyed with captcha images in all honesty. Especially the ones vBulletin use, I find them so difficult I normally have to refesh the image quite a few times just to get a good contrast between the letters and the background.

I think its a capitol A,.. but yeah not cool. The good thing about recaptcha is that it seems somewhat forgiving.

Recaptcha is scanning books and sending the words it doesn't understand to the capthca forms worldwide. The aim is digitailizing old books.

So whenever there is a ridiculus image, it's the work of a computer program that couldn't understand that "word".

Actually this is why there are two words. One is known to the system, one is not, and if you enter the known one correct, the other will be accepted as well.

So for that image, even if you enter "wtf pangs" as the answer, it will accept.

But this will make the system think that funny image is really "wtf", and if someone else in the world enters the same word for that image, it will permanently be recorded as "wtf" to the digitalized version of the book.

I would agree. I suppose half of the character being cut off makes it hard for the OCR software to determine what it is...

I hate the google ones, I can't read them. The vBulletin ones can also be annoying, only sometimes though.

lol, you think we have it tough? What about the poor blind folks. Have you ever tried to listen to a Captcha in vBulletin. Turn the lights off and give it a listen. Sounds like a scene from a scary movie

They are annoying, but unfortunately necessary.

A popular forum without any sort of anti-bot measures would be spammed to hell within days.

But yeah, sometimes they go over the top.

Plus, recaptcha isn't infallible. Anti-bot questions ("What is 2 + 5 - 1?" etc) are much better than a CAPTCHA, and much easier for Humans.

I know, lol. Why would a blind person be on a forum though? O_o

Legally blind people surf online regularly via screen readers I know what you mean though, the thought is weird (but it's common enough - screen read technology has come on leaps and bounds, as has the number of pure XHTML/CSS designs)

I never took the time to read and/or fully understand reCAPTCHA. I'm impressed!

Haha, I've had my fair share of weird ones, but I don't think I've had one THAT bad!

I Hate the ones with the colored background that makes it so hard to see as all the colors blend in.

Maybe we should get one of those red plastic films to looks through like the old decoders you got in a cereal box!
