I agree, CentOS for sure. Very stable, and most common when it comes to servers.

I'd always recommend 64bit. Most applications will work within it now.

For someone who's not experienced in sysadmin i'd suggest Ubuntu. Perhaps Debian for more advanced users.
CentOS is very stable but the official repository doesn't offer a lot of packages in compare with Debian/Ubuntu. On the other hand there are plethora of Ubuntu tutorials out there thanks to its newbie friendliness.

CentOS...faster?
May be you should actually do some benchmark testing before making such blanket statement
As for yum... Two of the alternatives are running apt which is far more mature than yum and it's significantly faster.
SUSE is bloated...I do have to say that.Last edited by PeakVPN-KH; 07-23-2009 at 10:14 AM.

For me I always use CentOS. Is stable, and never given me any reason to change.
ManageMyServices was sold by me in September 2009. I no longer have any affiliation with this company.

CentOS is and RH derivs are much more documented, and have more beginner tutorials, so I would say it's probably best for learning.
Ubuntu also has quite a bit of documentation, but I personally don't prefer it for server environments.
But, at the end of the day, it really depends on what you plan on doing with it as to which is actually the best in the long run.
Easier or not, flavor you need to run is obviously the one that makes the most sense to learn. This is the best signature in the world....Tribute!
(It is not the best signature in the world, no. This is just a tribute)

CentOS it's free really stable and really good support for hardware.
Ubuntu isn't really for server environments in my option.

I would recommend CentOS. You can decide on the bits depending on your Softwares that you will use.
