I'm currently hosted with several providers, including Awardspace (which I've actually had very few problems with) and Tagadab (who's support is a little basic for someone like me).
I have basic knowledge of Linux VPS servers + Plesk and ours at Tagadab keeps playing up - and although Tagadab support reply quickly, their responses are useless to a beginner like me.
I need a host which features:
1. Good support (or a server that doesn't go wrong!)
2. Low cost (of course!)
3. More than 1 IP address and the ability to add your own SSL certificates free of cost (aka you don't have to pay to have the hosting company install them on your account - you only have to buy them and can then install them yourself)
4. Custom Mailserver setup (so Google Apps mail can be used).
5. Good uptime.
I think that's all for now. I'd appreciate any help you guys can give!
What's low cost for you? (some class £14 per month as low cost where as others class it as expensive). Are you bothered about the vendor of the SSL cert or not bothered as long as it's supported by all major browsers? Most providers will allow you to have custom MX settings, they may not advertise it but a quick email to support and you'll find most will make the needed changes for you
I've spent hours shopping around only to be put down by mixed reviews here and there?
Well, you see, as a hosting company, it is impossible to please 100% of your clients. Some will be satisfied, some will be dissatisfied. If majority of them are satisfied, then the host should be OK.
Keep in mind that a single negative review and nothing else doesn't mean the host is bad - people tend to be quick to judge when something goes wrong but when everything is fine, they usually don't speak of their experience.
Anyway, it sounds like you need a VPS for the multiple IP issue. I've never heard of a shared host offering such a thing. You can of course purchase several dedicated IPs for a few accounts, but that would be pricey and in the end, it might end up being the cost of a VPS.
You shouldn't have a problem finding a shared host that provides IP's for SSL, the provider would just give you something like WHM (if you went with a cPanel host) - purchase your SSL + IP Address and you can do the rest in WHM
Well like we always say, look for honest reviews (no affiliate), look at WHT offers.
There are many web hosting providers.
You sound as if you are an expert on detecting reviews. Which ones are honest abd which ones not
That is impossible.
Giving tries to the different web hosting service providers is the way to get good web hosting service
You can search for a host offering Hsphere (I'm not aware of any other control panel on where you can assign dedicated IP to different domains in the same account) or something like a reseller account on where you can open a new account each with its own control panel and IP.
Thanks all, decided to with a VPS from WiredTree as they look good and are managed.
@Jo-b - I don't think it's you, your support seems to work on a suggestion basis where you will provide pointers to fix problems...as an unmanaged should be. I think I need that extra reassurance from managed as I have no time to manage it myself. Thanks for the post though - I'd still recommend tagadab for experienced hosters.
