I'm seriously wondering the same thing, but can't you get encrypted VPN's?

    A VPN connection is encrypted.
Othervise why would anyone pay for such thing ?

And yes, the provider will have logs that contain sensitive information.

If You have Your VPS or own Dedicated server, You can use SSH tunnels, or Open VPN's access server. Open VPN-AS can do all the job for You. And noone would be able sniff Your connection.

If you want a true VPN setup of your own, take a look at pptpd. It's a fairly simple setup and gives you a fully working PPTP VPN in about 30 minutes.

Now as to the provider watching what you do, yeah it's possible, but a pain. They have to track the correlations between your VPN ip and inbound/outbound traffic which most people won't know how to do. However, that doesn't mean VPN providers aren't doing it.

    Pads,

Please download a free copy of Bitwise Tunnelier from the url below.
    http://www.bitvise.com/download-area
It's free of charge for personal use.
This is the easiest way of building a SSH tunnel. All You2ll need is to build the tunnel and forward Your connection.
The program uses Socks 5 proxy forwarding.

Please remember to make necessary settings for Your browser.
    Firefox is preffered.
