    Question Addon Domains?

Ok, I'm at it again with yet ANOTHER question.

Does the term Addon Domain vary from host to host or is that pretty much standard.

If it's standard does it mean I could say do the following:

Domain1.com points webpage 1, like a WP site
Domain2.com points webpage 2, like a joomla install

Or does it mean both domains point to the single site?

Lastly, if they can point to 2 different sites, can you also make them point to the same site?

    Thanks everyone!

Addon domains behave as you described. Parked domains point to the same site.

Excellent. I thought I was going to have to write back to the several hosts that mentioned them and ask them each that question. I was hoping it the term was standard, but you can never tell.

Yes the term is standard and most hosting provider will not limit you on the number of Addon Domains.

It depends - most hosts (these days) also don't limit you on disk and transfer usage - but that doesn't mean that it's a good thing.

I wouldn't say choose a host with unlimited addon domains over one with 10 addon domains if you will likely never use more than 5 or 6 domains

    For most web hosting companies..

Add-On Domains could mean each domain pointing to a different website. If the web hosting account supports multiple add-ons, it means it can support multiple websites.

Another term used is Parked Domains, where 2 domains point to the same website.

    Hope this helps.

Yeah, that clears it up. Which means I'm just about ready to choose a host. Unless of course some other question comes up.

    Thanks again everyone!

I agree with Mike. Limited addon domains are sometimes better than unlimited ones. And honestly, most companies would probably give you a few extra if you needed some above the limit.

Unfortunately, most hosts are unlimited on that one. However, I only have 3 domains, one of which will be parked so I don't think I will be running into any trouble there.

That sounds good - the thing is I don't know if I'd even personally want to *try* hosting "unlimited" domains on a $5/month shared account.

I know what you are saying. In my particular case though, I don't think it's going to be an issue though.

I'm only hosting 2 sites, and won't need to host more than that. I'm already hunting in the $10-$20 range, because that's where I can regularly find the packages that meet my requirements.

Plus, I've already been mailing all the hosts in my top 10, just to make sure that what I have planned and what I think I'll have for hits, isn't going to have me searching for a new host in a month because of "cpu/ram" overuse.

I'm down to a top 7 now, but one of the responses confused me, and had me back here checking on what addon domains really ment.

Well, addon domain will allow you to have more than one independent website sharing the resources of your hosting account. Parked domain will allow you to point multiple domain to your site.

Add-On Domains mean each domain points to different website,

if you want to point several domains to a single website , you can publish your website on one of domains and redirect other domains to the main domain
