    Speakers and entrance fees :(

A well-known local speaker is speaking in the DFW area soon.

The sad part? $20 entry fee to see him speak for a mere 60 minutes.

Crazy. Whatever happened to educational public events being free, or at least less expensive?

Depending on who it is and how valuable their one hour lesson would be, $20 doesn't sound all that bad. Many of these speakers demand pretty hefty pay cheques for one hour.

Have you chequed google/youtube for the subject he's discussing? I have found some truly wonderful presentations online... for free!

Well, he has to eat too

Just like hosts won't part with hosting for free because it is their income, this is his gig.

If you really won't part with the twenty bucks, maybe you could horsetrade hosting his site. (just kidding)

I always assumed that the academic institution would absorb the speaking cost (if one was charged by the speaker), but perhaps that is not the case.

Yeah, that's definitely odd. Around here, any time someone comes to speak on campus at any of our universities, it is entirely free and open to the community. I figured it was like that everywhere.

Then again, if this guy is a professional public speaker and not an academic, he probably does it for a living instead of doing it primarily to share his research and get his name out there.

Ok, nothing personal, and academics aside, there is an interesting point here.

Maybe it's part of the hosting/opensource/web 2.0 mindset. Everyone expects that you can always do it cheaper, or for free. Even when they are trying to leverage free stuff into a profit. But, maybe you don't want to do it cheaper or for free. How many times have we seen that here, where someone will toil for hours and days on a problem instead of paying what the job/service/software is worth?

Think about some of the communications that you have had where they have this "great" idea that is "sure to make millions" as long as *you* shoulder all the costs and risk. And for that, they'll tell you that you ought to be grateful for the publicity.

Again, this is not directed at you or this particular lecture.

That is what I assumed. You articulated it better than me. I stand corrected about the point by learning of this event, though.
