    BUYING movies...

OK, so I'm faced with a dilemma last night. The local Hollywood video had previously viewed DVD's for $10-$18 each, or $25 for two. We returned the movies last night and they had a special I guess, two for $20. So we bought two movies (Lord of the Rings and Beautiful Mind).

Now, I've never BOUGHT a movie in my life. Have a few that were given to me or left at the house by someone, but never BOUGHT one myself.

My question is, what's the point? We have 99c movie rental coupons from Hollywood Video (we have 6 left, each coupon good for up to 3 rentals at a time at 99c and they expire at the end of this year). Someone said they had a Blockbuster one as well (same 99c). So I'm guessing these are around and I haven't checked other smaller video shops to see rental pricing.

I also haven't tried Netflix yet, but a friend uses them and likes the service ($20 month, all you can rent, return them when ever but can only have up to 3 at a time).

So as I'm BUYING these movies, I'm wondering, what is the point? I don't think I'll buy any more, but for those of you who BUY movies, why? If you've used Netflix, do you find that the one you want isn't available or you don't get it in a timely manner? Can you rent say Lord of the Rings and get it quickly?

I buy 'em. TV series too on DVD. The reason I buy them is a like to own 'stuff', and a DVD collection is nice stuff.

Also it makes it easy to just get off the couch, grab a movie and stick it in without needing to wander off to the video store. In addition (and the other anime junkies will know), the local video store doesn't always have the good stuff.

I used to buy movies all the time. If I really like a movie, I like to be able to watch it again at my leisure. I do, however, feel that the apparent market value of 'previously viewed' dvds is way too high. No way I'm gonna pay $20 for something used when I can pay $25 and get a brand new one.

Ahh...reminds me of the good old days where Kozmo.com and Urbanfetch would bring dvds to my house in an hour! That ruled!!

    I use NetFlix

You do have the option of paying more and having more DVD's out at one time..

I don't use Hollywood video, but rather a local video store ($3/rental, rent 1 get 1 coupons are on the back of grocery store coupons..). I get about 12 DVDs a month from netflix (maybe more maybe less), so 12 x $3 = $36, compared to the $20 im paying to NetFlix...

...that being said, why would anyone want to BUY movies???

Building a collection is probably the main reason for me too. Plus the fact that I'ld like to watch them whenever I want.

I have Lord of the Rings as well. Maybe I'ld like to see it again some time in januari? Who knows. Nice to have it on the shelve.

Kinda depends on which country you are in as well I guess.

A new DVD like Lord of the Rings costs around $ 30-35 here.

But renting a newly released DVD for 1 day (return by 5 pm the next day) also costs me at least $ 8

And I really hate to shave, dress, leave the nice warm house on a sunday to return the darn rental. (this ain't California tonto. It's COLD )

    Thumbs up

I've used Netflix for over a year now and I like it. I haven't stepped inside a video store since. I've had no problems getting popular movies fast like Lord of the Rings. One DVD was lost (the original Rollerball with James Caan) in the mail but they were cool and didn't charge me saying they expect that from time to time.

I do buy some movies my favoirites by only have about 20. Favs like Pulp Fiction, Resivour Dogs, The Matrix, Scarface, Spiderman those I buy because I want them as my collection. If not I wouldn't buy them!

    Chicken:

I have Netflix, have had them for a long time. I upgraded to the highest level ($40 per month) and I can have 8 DVD's out at a time. Netflix may just be, IMO, one of the finest services on the Web.

    - No late fees
    - No travel to the video store
    - No waiting in lines

Load up your rental queue with a lot of movies you want to see and if the next one's not available, they go down one slot and ship you the second one on your list.

I currently have 178 movies in my queue, so I'll never run out of movies to watch. I do not own a SINGLE DVD, I've never bought one, but I *WILL* be buying some of the movies that I really love.

For instance, I am ABOUT to become a DVD movie owner, because I have a pre-order in for "Glengarry Glen Ross" (perhaps one of the finest films ever made) at DeepDiscountDVD.com ($17 brand new).

Since some of the rental DVD's can be in rough shape (scratches and such) and since the wholesale cost of a new DVD is about $12, I'll go ahead and spend a few bucks more and buy any movie I want to KEEP from DeepDiscount.

    Enjoy!
I thank my Lord for all His wonderful blessings.

I rent and buy DVD's. If I rent one that I really like, I wait for it to go on sale at a local store and then buy it.

I live 25 mins from town so rentals are not always an option.

I don't watch TV nor watch movies. No time. its been a few years since I actually sat down to watch a TV show. I'll catch the occasional hockey game at the pub, but that is the extent of it.

Ah yes, us anime junkies understand... while netflix does have a fair collection of anime there is just so much which you can't rent and well I'd have a heart attack if I actually saw an anime store pop up this far down south...

I do tend to rent a lot of movies... I'm on netflix's largest plan and get about 30 movies through each month, more or less depending on how fast the mail wants to be.

But I also buy a fair share of movies as well... mostly anime... mostly for the fact thats the only way I can get it...

when your toddler grows up, you will find they love videos. the good thing about netflix is you can keep it for as long as you want.

We buy dvds all the time, like toy story, shrek...etc...

I enjoy having high quality digital media around to enjoy on demand, thats why I buy things.

Than I rip them right away (I have a HTPC). I have well over 400GB of videos and music, all lossless (none of that MP3 crap).

If it wasn't two of $20, believe me, I wouldn't have even considered it. But $10 (each) for Lord of the Rings and Beautiful Mind seemed OK. Both really well done movies and worth it IMHO. I find very few movies really worth it, let alone worth the $9.50 a ticket at the theater (each person), plus the cost of snacks! At least the DVD system I just got sounds better, but I wish I had a screen that big. I've but a tiny 32" -I need the projection! We almost bought one once with the wedding money, heh. But I cancelled it.

Hollywood is $3.99 for 5 days I think (regular price). I sure hope they always have the 99c coupons, as 99c sounds better than $3.99 to me Also, it is RAINING here in SoCal! RAINING! (This is BREAKING news here in CA -the network news can spend the whole 1/2 hour on rain rain rain.)

Didn't know you could order a higher level (as mentioned by someone else in the thread as well). And I've never even heard of Glengarry Glen Ross so I'll have to check that out. Have you seen A Beatiful Mind? Wonder if you liked that?

Yeah, we'll have to rent all the Dinsney, etc., and all the children's classics. Luckily I love that stuff, Toy Story, etc., so I can't wait.

Thanks for all the comments. We'll give Netflix a go soon!

I buy so that I can watch the movie/show over and over and over and over again! I mostly only buy movies/shows that have Sarah Michelle Gellar in them though, because, in my opinion, she's the best!

I have a collection of close to 200 DVD's. After a hard day's work coming home at 1am or so, nothing is better than watching a great, movie that I love. I have watched Blade 10 times at least and Blade II just as much. I love my movie collection and You cannot run out to hollywoof video at 1am, to get the movie you like, but then again how do you know you will feel in the mood for the movie you rented?

Mamet won the Pulitzer for "Glengarry Glen Ross". Here's the cast list from the film. Is this a powerhouse line up or what?

    Al Pacino
    Kevin Spacey
    Alec Baldwin
    Ed Harris
    Jack Lemmon
    Alan Arkin
    Jonathan Pryce

Liked "A Beautiful Mind" very much.

Sounds good! I also woner if people saw Gosford Park? Aside from Altman being an aclaimed director, I used to hang out with the director's son so when the movie came out it caught my eye, but never saw it. Also recently saw Monster's Ball and was surprised that it wasn't boring (the promos for it made me not interested). I was surprised at how errrr... interesting that movie was.

I currently own about 15 DVDs... not many, but it wasn't all that long ago that I started.

Last week I bought "Panic Room" for US$18.36 (AU$34) and "Air Force One" for US$9.45 (AU$17.50) both new. I'm yet to buy a used DVD, especially from a video store as they charge too much.

When I buy DVDs I usually buy them online. There is a site (http://www.dvdplaza.com.au/pricecrawler/) that gets the cheapest prices for the dvd that you're after - always handy.

Mostly I rent dvds. The local video store is literally 2 minutes walk from my house. New release videos and DVDs cost US$2.13 (AU$3.95) on weekends and US$1.59 (AU$2.95) through the week.

I don't buy movies often but when I do it's because I don't want to go to a movie store to get it I want to just be able to pop it in whenever. Also I like some of the DVDs special features, other than that no real reason...just another thing to waste money on.
