    Help Needed.

so again, a problem with my FM station. I'm now looking for a dirt cheap + reliable vps for my radio station. (shoutcast).

I don't need anything fancy. my main concern is the budget. that would be $10 max. I don't care about the virtualization as long as its not, HyperVM. Xen is much preferred but I don't really care as long as it has a decent RAM.

Please take note that I will be using this to run Shoutcast only. I will be running 2 stations with 128Kbps stream and for the first station around 150 users max and for the 2nd one, around 100 also.

    I'm looking at HiVelocity's $8 VPS
    OpenVZ
    10GB space
    256MB RAM
    1500GB Bandwidth.
    $8

my main concern is the RAM will this be okay?
I'm currently running 2 shoutcast servers + cpanel on my Servint vps and it consumes around 950MB RAM.

I really think that "$10 max" for a reliable VPS suitable for shoutcast is going to be impossible to find. As for RAM, I think you already answered your own question with regards to your Servint vps usage?

Is $10 really the max. you can stretch on this? If so perhaps a specialist shoutcast host can provide a more appropriate service for your needs (i.e. so there aren't the additional overheads of your own VPS instance and hence I guess there must be providers able to do this at a better price)?

I thought so too. I can stretch it up to $15 though but I would prefer the cheapest.

I don't want to host my station on those shoutcast hosts as they are indeed a lot more expensive than those of some vps companies. they offer 128kbps/10 users for $15 a month but in a vps, I can set my own limits and It will be more flexible.

You might consider shedding in a few more dollars could get you a better VPS provider and a better config will only do good.

you should raise your budget to $20-30 /mo, and also look for unmanaged VPS, with $10, you'll only get 256MB VPS, my current VPS has 256MB RAM, and is very fast, not sure about your site tho.

How much of that memory is actually used by Shoutcast? Are you just relaying a stream or doing so re-encoding on the server? It seems like a lot of memory usage. I've run experimental Icecast servers and found the memory usage to be pretty minimal.

On another note, maybe my math is off but:

    128 kbps * 250 users = 32,000 kbps or 31 mbps

I seriously doubt that you'll find a cheap VPS that lets you do 31 mbps. Maybe several of those $8 HiVelocity VPSs combined might handle it...

ServInt has figured out that I have issues with apache, that's why. now its running fine at around 500MB.

also does anyone of you know if HiVelocity allows shoutcast on their servers?

Why not use one of the shoutcast/Icecast hosts instead of a vps? I found some pricing that's reasonable from icyshout.com and uberstreaming.com. I'm sure there are a bunch of hosts out there that would give you exactly what you need.

I do believe that first of all to have cpanel on a vps the minimum ram needed is more then the 256 i believe, and as for running live stream and such you'd be best of getting a vps with more then you need therefore you dont have issues in future!
