How tall can CPUs get?
Currently we have quad core CPUs, and does anyone know how many cores a future CPU could have? Does the height of the CPU get bigger for each core it has? So would a 100 core CPU mean it will get 6 foot high?

No, the goal is to make them small and compact, but at the same time not generating excess heat, smaller and faster is more(there are some tech being done for this and also for batteries so not to loose to much power due to heat loss a physics prof of mine was explaining it.)
As for the cores, I think you are thinking in the wrong direction. Before we get to hitting 100 cores, it will be a different technology not cores that do it I think. There has been talk for years that using an organic processer could be 100 times faster. But again for the most part I hear talk but never have seen(or looked for that matter).
For an example of this, just look at all other fields. Cars get better MPG now than they did before not by creating better gas, but by changing the systems that manage the cars, batteries, etc. Or look at video displays. I think sony is the one that came up with the paper thin screen that can play video, it wasent about improving the current technology, but going in a different direction.Chicago Electronic Cigarettes: Tobacco Free, Smoke Free. 3 E-Cig Models, 11 flavors, and accessories.

No. If you read about Intels "tick tock" way of releasing products, you'll see they release an improvement and then in the next revision move down to a smaller manufacturing process. Thus keeping things in check.
As things get smaller though, more and more problems crop up - eventually, they will need something radically different I think. Until then, increasing the number of cores (and the efficiency of each) will likely be the game-plan.Alasdair

I think cooling would have more of an issue when it comes to height. Zalman's are a good example of a fan that takes up a lot of real estate:

Interesting topic. I can't wait to see what chip Intel releases next.

No, as technology progresses, it gets smaller allowing for more room onto the die. I have heard of the possiblility if not already in production of an octal core cpu (8 cores).
