    D-U-N-S (D&B DUNS number)

How many of you applied for the D&B DUNS number? It is not a requirement for most business I think, but to have it, I think it cool.

I'm in Malaysia, we can't apply for BBB for our business, the only way we would get our business verified is via SSL(full validation).

    What's about D-U-N-S ?

Is it available for United States businesses? Or is it for Malaysia?

    Hi!
I think there are misconceptions about this..and let me explain.
First and foremost..they try and sell you a management package if you ask for a free DUNS number. It is true that a free DUNS cannot be used to relay credit info. However..if you hangle with them..and wait a few days..you can get a better price out of them.

Now..can you immediately get credit even if you buy a management package?
Nope. In fact...it does nothing to help you get credit at all at first because you have no beacon score. It takes at least six months before you get a beacon score..and only if you ALREADY have credit and these creditors report your payment history to DUNS. Bottom line: The people that sell these packages are paid on commission. More sale=better commission. Period. If you are serious about this..buy the cheapest basic package and build a good beacon score with it. Don't expect much until it is at least six months old..or maybe even a year.

    >>>Another lie the salesperson told me is this: You will immediately be able to seperate your personal credit from your business credit if you a DUNs number. Absolutely not true. If your personal credit is toast..your business credit is going ot be the same for some time.

While we at Viper Logic have a DUNS we never need it until we began doing some software development for a California State Prison, then we did a projectfor the US Coast Gaurd both required this DUN number other then that the BBB we have lived without for over 16 years now. D&B

Did they give a reason for why they required you to have a DUN number?

    Hi!
I believe it has something to do with governement contracts..something I have zero desire to pursue. In fact..I believe it was oe of the reasons to ask for the free (non-credit) DUNS number.

The free DUNS # is the same thing as you paying them. It works the same, they just look for your past history which is completely useless. Get a free DUNS #, and thats it. Also it will only do you good use if you need to apply for business credit/net terms.

    Hi!
So..they lied to me? They lie to other people too? I find that hard to believe.

    Just pulled from their website:

Getting a D-U-N-SŪ Number alone will not establish a complete D&B credit profile for your business. To establish a credit file and obtain a D-U-N-SŪ Number, we recommend you establish a D&B credit file.

    >>>You are correct...they lied to me.

Told ya, I have a DUNS #, and I'm about to finish my degree in business management, and DUNS is something they keep teaching us about.

    Hi!
Well..as this article states..there is a "maybe" factor involved.
I might or might not get one..I really don't see the need.

    >>>Well, well. I just found in my old archived email-

Me: Can the free DUNs number be used to build credit?
DUNs Rep: No. You must purchase a package.

We use DUNS in some cases: registering .travel domains, buying Verisign SSL cert with EV. I am not sure in Malaysia, but in Vietnam, we can register DUNS just fine. We have done for us, and our customers already.

This is not true. When they sell you a package they will "build" it for you, which means they just update information for you. But if you get the free DUNs #, it will take a while because any of your current vendors who use DUNs will need to report it.

Hmm, any more information on this? Still seems like a fairly confusing topic.

A DUNs # is not really needed in the hosting industry TBH. My company uses it because we sell consumer electronics, so we have net terms with our vendors. Net terms = credit, which builds ours. After doing good on our terms for a while our credit has been building on DUNs (for free) and once its improved, we can go out and get better loans, terms, anything that uses credit.
