You get what you pay for. There's no free lunch. If it's too good to be true....you get my point?
Simply read their Acceptable Use Policy. It speaks for itself. This is a very small outfit, with the 2 owners running it when I signed up until just recently, when they hired a support person to answer the phones, during normal business hours. If I'm not mistaken, that brings their total to 3 persons running the company. They do not own their servers in house, but I believe they answer the phones from it. They lease thier server from datepipe..
Before they hired someone, I once waited almost a month for support, and it wasn't till after I submitted a complaint with the BBB that I got a response several weeks later. They claimed they did not get a chance to reply back to over 30 emails I sent, including phone calls that went unanswered during that time because they were too busy. During our 6 month span, our site was down several times. My opinion is that was due to too many users, but I'm no expert on the issue. At one time it was down at least once a day for almost a week.
Features are great, including Shell access. But if you plan on trying to take advantage of the 500 megs or the 50 gig transfer, you'll find yourself in violation of the AUP, because with it's limitations it's going to be difficult to achieve that kind of transfer and storage. They eventually cancelled our account because we had more than 5 movie files on our account. Something we obviously overlooked at the time of signup, or something they added to their AUP during the time we were with them. We're not sure which but I believe it was added later, because at the time of signup, I told them my intentions to have several video files on the account and that I will most likely use 20 gigs a month. They agreed that wouldn't be a problem. Of course, I had nothing in writing.
They offered no compromise, such as asking us to simply remove the files. Instead, they simply took our money (we paid for the year) and ran, which is perfectly within their right to do so, but who wants to deal with a group like that? They did us a favor in the end.
Read for yourself some of the highlights from their AUP. It's almost laughable.
....having hundreds of JPGS (such as fan or celebrity sites or photo galleries) are not allowed.....You may also not have any single file that is over 25 megabytes in size.
Customer may not with out permission have sound/video files in any format (MP3, ASX, ASF, RA, RAM , QTV etc.) due to the high rate of illegal transfer of copy written material. Even with permission, there is a 5 file maximum on all audio and video files and each file must be smaller than 5 MB due to the demands they place on the server.
No File Repository
....examples of this would be using the web space to store images for auction descriptions , flash or any other files used on another site but stored on our server. This also includes the hosting of 'sig' images for use on message boards.
Buyer beware. Read the AUP and TOS of every provider before you pay!
It looks like this is a pattern with these people. I just got notice that I overused my storage and they found it impossible to allow me to continue on their service. I got exactly 3 mo. of use of their "service". They kept the rest of my money.
Not only did it take them 1 month of that time to set up the database they promised but I had a very difficult time getting any support at any time.
The folder size controls never worked and their usage indicator always showed zero.
Do yourself a favor stay away from this band of thieves and spread the word amongst your friends that they seem to be waiting to rip you off as soon as they can.

I don't think that should be the point. When you are sold something you should be able to use all it not half of it.

Yes. And for 6 months I used all 500 and sometimes used 30 gigs a month. But like any company offering this, it was bound to come to an end. I never said I was surprised.
They're obviously hurting and it's probably just a matter of time before they bite the dust.
ipves' description of EHostSource is a pretty accurate one - my experience with the company was very similar. Excellent features, terrible customer support, and terms of service that seem designed so they can grab their customers' money and run with it.
I started with them in July and just got booted because they discovered some zip files on my server. Never mind that the files were about 10k each (smaller than most pictures on a typical website) or that they had been there for the last four months. There was no nice request to remove my files; instead I opened Outlook one morning and found that my email account no longer worked.
It is the moral obligation of a company to implement the enforcement of its terms of service wherever possible. That means if they have a problem with certain file extensions, they should restrict the user from being able to upload it via FTP, or they can run a batch program on their servers to eliminate the files. Never mind that zip files are a perfectly normal and common file that people expect to be able to post with any web service.
So I hope that this company changes their act or bites the dust. They won't be getting any more business from me. Take my advice and stay clear of them!
So what sites can be hosted on this server? text only website?
