    Which server for mysql only?

    Which server for mysql only?

    Hello,

This is sort of a continuation to this thread here

Based upon the screenshots I provided below. What server would best suit my needs. I need this server to be able to handle the mysql usage and server load.

This server will be only for mysql. The rest of the site (html, videos) will be hosted on a different server.

If you think these servers are not enough for this please let me know any suggestions you have pertaining to server specifications.

    Server 1:

    Dual Core
    Core 2 Duo E4500 2.2Ghz 2MB Cache
500 GB SATA II Hard Drive
    2 GB DDR2 SDRAM

    Server 2:

    Dual Core
    Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0Ghz 6MB Cache
500 GB SATA II Hard Drive
    4 GB DDR2 SDRAM

    Server 3:

    Quad Core
    Core 2 Quad Q9300 2.5Ghz 6MB Cache
500 GB SATA II Hard Drive
    4 GB DDR2 SDRAM

    Thank you for your time.

    MySQL needs three things:

    1) CPU Horse Power
    2) Lots of Memory
    3) Fast disk access.

Server 3 would be your best bet. Though if you could get a 15,000RPM SCSI hard drive in there it would make it that much better.

The other two servers are great for file stores not much CPU or memory needed for serving files just a good network to transfer them over.

    Winstyn,

Are those three things listed in order of importance?

    Thanks for your time.

Well, in the above three configurations you have the same HDD, so disk access can be left out of the question temporarily.

The other two factors entirely depend on the kind of applications that you would be using. Applications like forums etc. would need a bit more CPU processing power and RAM too. This is because it going to have a lot of write cycles(new forum searches)...and also searches(that would take up more memory).
