Paypal, Securecode3D & Verified by Visa

Does anyone here aware that paypal does not support the mastercard securecode3D authentication (S3D) ?

I get so annoyed last week that my card stop working, some of my paypal subscription payment failed. Called the bank, and they said the card is ok, but there was lots of securecode failure. They told me that my card has been enrolled for the S3D

I did sent a few email to Paypal, and they replied this :

Quote:
Thank you for taking the time to contact us with your concern. Hello, my name is Kurt. I am happy to assist you further.

I understand that you have doubts on 3-D Secure.

Now let me explain it to you.

3-D Secure is the authentication protocol used by Verified by Visa and MasterCard SecureCode. PayPal has successfully completed certification and interoperability testing with Visa International (currently not yet completed with MasterCard).

The goal of 3-D-Secure is to authenticate the consumer by the entry and verification of a designated password or PIN prior to the completion of an internet purchase. The 3-D Secure step slots into the payment process before the merchant sends the normal financial authorization request to their acquirer. The 3-D Secure protocol uses dedicated messages that flow over the internet between the merchant, card scheme, and issuer,
outside of the network used for the financial authorization and clearing messages.

In summary, the authentication process is carried out in the following way:

1. The cardholder enrolls for the Verified by Visa or MasterCard
SecureCode service at their issuing bank and chooses their Personal
Assurance Message and authentication password or PIN. The cardholder
then shops for goods and enters their payment details into the merchant
checkout page as normal.

2. The merchant 3-D Secure software interacts with the card scheme and
issuer to determine whether the cardholder is enrolled for 3-D Secure.
If the cardholder is enrolled for the service, the merchant seeks
authentication of the cardholder by their issuing bank.

3. The cardholder is shown the details of their transaction and enters
their PIN. The entry of the PIN is used both to authenticate the
consumer and to confirm that the consumer approves the completion of the
transaction. The consumer's issuing bank validates the PIN.

4. The issuer responds to the merchant to indicate whether the
cardholder is authentic, and if authentic, provides an authentication
code to the merchant.

So we advise to you to use VISA at the moment. If you use MasterCard,
you can still use those cards that have not activated for the 3-D
Secure.

I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused to you.

If you need any assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Sincerely,
Kurt

Hello, this is Nicky here, I will be happy to assist you with your
question regarding your PayPal account.

I understand that you want to inquire something about the 3-D
Secure,right?

Currently PayPal do not support that service. You can still use your
Visa card in PayPal system.

If there is any new function in our system, there will be a update in
our website.

Thanks for choosing PayPal. Please let me know if you need further
assistance.

Sincerely,
Nicky

It appear that not so many merchant really adopt the Verified by Visa and Mastercard Secure3d authentication. WorldPay for example, but i saw that 2CO is supporting both VBV and Secure3D. Fortunately my visa still work with paypal.

Perhaps, paypal should speed up the certification and interoperability testing with mastercard. I know there are lot of people using the S3D, not just me alone.

They do not even support Verified by Visa, if they'll do, it will be a big plus.

I believe you are completely correct. That said, Verified By Visa support seems difficult to find at almost any merchant. :-/

In theory, yes. In practice, I am not sure. Does anyone have any positive or negative experience in that regard?

I understand the PayPal's strategy, they support VBV and MSC if you have Payflow Pro merchant account.

They won't provide this facility if you have a free account.
