They are down too, don't know if they use the same data center but the chances of fire at 2 data center at the same time in WA is slim

This was on nanog this morning around 6:20 AM central:

Fisher Plaza, a self-styled carrier hotel in Seattle, and home to multiple datacenter and colocation providers, has had a major issue in one of its buildings late last night, early this morning.
The best information I am aware of is that there was a failure in the main/generator transfer switch which resulted in a fire. The sprinkler system activated. From speaking to the fire battalion chief, I am under the impression that Seattle Fire did use water on the fire as well, but I am unsure of this.

Given the failure location, generator power was not available, and cooling failed. UPS power to systems continued, and I can personally vouch that they held out for well over an hour. When we were able to access our equipment, ambient air temps were well over 100 degrees in the room our equipment is located in.

At least some, if not many circuits were affected. Several large co-location providers and other datacenters are located in the facility, these facilities have no power.

As this was the main/generator switch, and it is now highly damaged, the circuits in the area are damaged, and the entire area is doused in water, a rapid restoration of power does not seem likely. Fisher Plaza's phone numbers now result in fast-busy signals, so I have no recent update from them directly.

Interestingly, this building is also the production studios for several Seattle TV and radio stations.

There is no ETA for resolution.

I believe SL is at the Sabey facility, not Fisher. Somebody correct me if I am wrong.

I have colo in Internap SEF (Seattle Fisher) and can confirm a fire and that the sprinklers went off. While Sabey is a seperate facility just south of Seattle, my understanding is that they are currently routing all traffic from Sabey (known as SEF003) through SEF via direct fiber. When I looked at moving to Sabey due to the extra space and power, this was one of our concerns (another point of failure).

Yeah, I would assume they are since they aren't down . I'm not overly familiar with the Seattle internap facilities.

That just sucks. It must of been really bad for the sprinklers to activate, hope everyone's servers are okay.

Softlayer is in Intergate.West, a Sabey facility completley unrelated and unaffected by this fire at Fisher. This is bad news though...

I used to use Authorize.net back in the day; AFAIK at this point in time they are a gigantic payment processor. How the heck does a business like that, of that size, especially given what they do, not have fully redundant multi-datacenter infrastructure that can handle this sort of failure without noticing it? I mean really.

Linkpoint (firstdata) was essentially down for several days due to an expired SSL cert at the gateway. I have no faith in any of these types of companies.

Remember when hotmail.com was down, ages ago, due to an expired domain name?

A random person finally paid the renewal fee for Microsoft to get hotmail.com back online.

Lol, it would be funny if a random 3rd-party suddenly owned hotmail.com.

I remember it. It was a few years back. Someone at MS let the domain expire.

Copyrighted name. Easy to get the domain back if that happened when you have lawyers on staff and money to throw around.

Microsoft forgot to renew its hotmail.co.uk domain name in 2003 but there is a more famous story.

In December 1999, Microsoft forgot to renew the domain name Passport.com, and so rendered its Hotmail service partially crippled. A Linux programmer, Michael Chaney, paid the $35 Network Solutions fee and promptly handed over ownership to Microsoft.

Microsoft forgets to renew hotmail.co.uk domain
    6th November 2003 11:49 GMT

    ...

As a result, last month Microsoft lost its claim to the domain and it was duly returned to the open market to be picked up by whomever fancied it

Luckily, the domain was snapped up on the same day - October 23. The new owner - a good hearted soul - then proceeded immediately to contact Microsoft, inform the giant of its slip and arrange to hand back the domain.

However, Microsoft didn't want to know. Despite phone calls and emails - and being fobbed off by Microsoft drones - our man behind this public-spirited deed was completely blanked by the software empire.

Microsoft only took notice when The Register contacted the company yesterday afternoon to enquire why its hotmail.co.uk site was registered to a private individual.

It was then we were told that the matter was under investigation and being "escalated". Worryingly, no one in the UK could deal with the matter so it was up to the US to sort things out.

Of course, while Microsoft's spinstresses tried to stall for time, the company was busy scurrying behind the scenes to sort out this embarrassing episode. It managed to contact hotmail.co.uk's new owner, grovel at their mistake and sort out the mess. By all accounts, hotmail.co.uk will be returned in a few days.

A spokeswoman for Nominet UK - the registry for all .uk domains - confirmed that hotmail.co.uk had failed to be renewed and was placed back into pool of available domains.

For Nominet's part, she confirmed that "all the standard renewal procedures were followed regarding hotmail.co.uk".

"I would like to remind companies and their agents that it is their responsibility to renew their domains," she said.

Despite repeated attempts to seek comment from Microsoft, the software giant has failed to cobble together any form of statement that might shed light on this situation.
