committed big blunder :!!!! :((
yes really committed a big blunder on my friend vps
I didn't know copying index.htm file would copy everything on the older vps to new one,
I just wanted to transfer index.htm file so I gave it via scp command and it copied every little bit of the files:

i think what he's trying to say is, when he copies one file from the older VPS to the new VPS
it copies every single file from the old VPS to the NEW VPS
Correct me if im wrong?
And he only wants to copy one file it seems. however it's not clear
please confirm

I think his copy resulted in over-writing the files. Can you tell what help you are looking for?

What command are you using to transfer the files? Seems like that's where you're going wrong.

actually I just wanted to say tht copying index.htm or index.zip file over the server copies every **** on the older vps to the newer one, the files such as entry logs, repository and every other .... gets copied to new server..
the only way I could solve it was delete the directory and re-add domain , I had learnt lesson not to move index.htm or index.zip files over servers
I had used this command:
Code:scp -rp /path/to/source root@destination_IP:/path/to/destination

It's nothing to do with the file you copied. The r flag commonly means "recursive", ie. apply the command to the directory specified and everything underneath it.
In future you might want to try using man (eg "man scp") before running any command you don't understand - it should give you an indication of what you're about to do...Chris

foobic - thanks for the suggestion and info, but when I tried to move gzip files using the same above command with some other file name they moved successfully, they didn't copy everything underneath the directory but just moved the specified file only,

koolnhut... Did you actually go read a man page for SCP? Whatever may have happened with your gzip copy (maybe you specified the actual file name?), -r means recursive, just like foobic pointed out: http://www.eos.ncsu.edu/remoteaccess/man/scp.html
You don't need the -p, either... just do:
scp filename user@hostname:/target/directory

No, it won't.
I just wanted to transfer index.htm file so I gave it via scp command
Code:scp /path/to/index.htm foo@some.remote.machine:/path/to/where/you/want/it/.
and it copied every little bit of the files |long list of files snipped|
There is nothing wrong with the scp software you used; it is the way *you* used it. Do not blame the tool. Use this as a learning experience; since you are obviously very new to using command line tools, you'd be well advised to set up a test account somewhere to practice with.“Even those who arrange and design shrubberies are under
considerable economic stress at this period in history.”

thanks for the info and suggestions watkins and hildy
I learned tht I should never use -rp un-necessarily in future, will keep tht in mind,
though the way my problem solved was different, I downloaded the file from old server and uploaded it in the new server, leaving no chance for mistakes to repeat again
